I'm thinking of the Carolina mountains as my next place to live. Would you consider Asheville, with its art deco feel as the place to live or would you go for Greenville with its more settled ambience? I've lived in California on the coast all my life and I'd like to try something different. Low cost of living, affordable housing, a safe place to live and having that view outside the window without the price tag. I know Colorado is expensive because every one goes there but no one seems to know the Blue Ridge Mountains are just as stunning. If any one has any other ideas about mountain living in the South or elsewhere, please free to throw in your opinion. Thanks.
you is correct. invaders are coming to the mountains and the municipal govts are being converted by northeasterners. bad stuff indeed.
The infrastructure in, mostly rural, Oconee County is not keeping up with the increased population. Some of the home grown county commissioners have been talking about ways to slow down growth.
For instance, limiting the number of new homes built on and around Lake Keowee. May not stop the flow, but at least slow it down.
People are starting to realize that unchecked growth is bad.
Here's an example of some of the things that the yankees are doing to earn the ire of the locals: Us local yokels have been using Lake Keowee since the Keowee River valley was flooded 40 years ago. Recently, the Johnny-come-lately residents of one of the exclusive gated communities tried to seize a portion of the lake for their own private use because they were tired of us local yokels bass fishing around their docks and just having fun on the water.
This time they were denied their request. But, as their numbers keep increasing.......well, you get the picture.
It's kinda funny, you always hear people from other parts of the country say things like, "I love the South....the people are so friendly." Then they move down here, hide in their gated communities and make attempts to restrict resource usage to the locals.
Just like Ted Kennedy and windmills, I guess. Loves 'em as long as they ain't in his backyard.
What is the striped bass situation in Keowee Lake?
The striped bass situation in Lake Keowee is as follows:
There are none.
However, the next lake down, Lake Hartwell, has a very robust striper population.
Glad to hear there are no stripers in Keowee lake ... they crowd out the other pops.
Southerners have exactly the same opportunity to buy property; there is no "crowding out". The catch is you can't use confederate money.
it's the DYs that i despise with a purple passion!

Well, actually I do mind them moving in because instead of adopting the Southern way of small government, independence, self reliance and accountability for ones own actions, they're trying to establish a northern culture in the South whose traits are over-regulation, high taxation, reliance on government services, etc.
And they're winning! Just look at North Carolina and Virginia. And Florida has been a lost cause for quite a while.
southrons are PATIENT! we WILL eventually win this one.

Country Ain't Country
Travis Tritt
He was raised on a tractor in overalls and boots
Been to college and then law school since leaving his roots
Came home in a Lexus, he left in a Ford
Country ain't country no more
He told his daddy catch up with the times
He said now a days people trade heifers on-line
Dad ain't sealing deals with a handshake like before
Country ain't country no more
No, country ain't country no more
Chorus:
The back forty was sold to make up for hard times
Then sold by the half acre lot overnight
The houses went up and the trees were cut down
And there went the finest deer hunting around
Lord everyone's locking their doors
'Cause country ain't country no more
Now his dad sits in traffic looking 'round at the change
Watching crews turn the county road into four lanes
The old sunday drive has turned into a chore
Country ain't country no more
Lord, country ain't country no more
Chorus:
The back forty was sold to make up for hard times
Then sold by the half acre lot overnight
The houses went up and the trees were cut down
And there went the finest deer hunting around
Lord everyone's locking their doors
'Cause country ain't country no more
There's no turning back
And you just can't ignor
That country ain't country no more
No, country ain't country no more
I admire your optimism. It's been hard for me to be optimistic lately with all the construction going on near my home.
And it's all yankees.
There's a New Jersey yankee (the worst kind) clearing a lot down the road from my place to build his house and the sumbeach has put video cameras up in the trees to monitor everything going on.
I'd bet that he would gladly vote for video monitoring of public places, as well.
It sounds as if your beef is with liberals.
I had the unfortunate experience of asking this question a few years ago about Oregon, and ran into the same welcome and friendly advice that you are handing out.
I moved to Twain Harte, CA. It's beautiful, four seasons, quiet and a red county. We get a little snow, but not often.
Lol! You handled that wonderfully...
Liberals and damnyankees. And all yankees are liberals.
Example: Rudy Giuliani. The 'conservative' from New York. Pro abortion. Pro gun control.
Those ain't conservative positions.
Don't tell me he's buying in NC as well; Kenmure? Lake Lure? ;-D
Who?
If I had the choice of Asheville or Greenville, I'd select Atlanta.
"Liberals and damnyankees. And all yankees are liberals.
Example: Rudy Giuliani."
