Listen to your physician. Fad diets work only in the short run. Unless you are able to modify your dietary intake drastically and stick with that modification, all diets will fail.

In some cases, bariatric surgery is the only hope for the morbidly obese. Your physician knows far more about you than anyone on Free Republic does.

Asking questions about what YOU should do about a health question on Free Republic is a waste of your time. Only you and your physician can make such decisions. Even those very few MDs on FR don't know you. They have not examined you.

Go back to your doctor.

Don't know anything about this diet, but wanted to encourage you not discount bariatric surgery - it can work for you. I had a Duodenal Switch on 11/30/05 and have lost 90 lbs. It was the best thing I could have done for myself!

I don't think I could swallow a tablespoon of oil every day. I think you have to do it two hours before you eat. Yuk.

On the other hand I found this website today. Check it out. It makes sense to me and he has lots of testimonials.

I suggest instead, a regimen of twice a day, pushups. Do as many as you can without straining yourself greatly.

Do one set in the morning, one set in the evening.

Best to do the "Atlas Pushup" where you place hands on something elevated, so that you can dip your chest a little bit below the level of your palms.

You did great on Atkins once before so do it again. But you have to stay active and to do that you have to start introducing complex carbs. Stay away from sweets and you'll be fine.

Anything you do will rollback on you if you don't change your lifestyle.

Great to hear you want to lose the weight! The secrete is simple, fulfilling it takes work. To be very blunt, there is no long term magical diet that will shed off those pounds for good. Furhtmore, yo yo diets are horrible for you long term. It really stresses body when you lose and gain that kind of weight. However, that being said, if you follow what is stated below, you will shed off an enormous amount of weight, gain confidence, achieve a higher standard of living, etc.

I am sure you have heard this before, but it has worked for me: Eat healthy and exercise. I highly recommend investing in a gym AND a personal trainer. You will be amazed at how fast you lose the weight, gain confidence, strenght, etc. If you can get past the first 3 months, your body will actually CRAVE excises, your metabolism will sky rocket after a few months and you'll crave healthy foods.

It is the surest long term way to weight lose and I GUARENTEE you it will work.

Freep-mail me with some additional details (age, general occupation, work environment, etc.). Your doctor's advice is more sound than mine, but I might be able to provide you with some tips based on my own experience.

The first thing you need to understand is that "losing weight" is not what you need to do -- nor was it ever what you needed to do. We'll go on from there (just in case this sounds cryptic).

Why did you gain back the weight after following the Atkins?

Atkins works but you have to continue a low-carb regimen. If you'e willing to do that, you'll keep the weight off. But it means seriously changing your life style/eating habits.Good luck.

By the way, I agree with posters here that your doctor is your best resource. Do what he says AND reduce your carb intake.

Advice from someone who has been and continues to be successful with this problem without surgery, pills or gimmicks of any kind.

Why not live AS IF you have had the surgery already?

Eat very small amounts of food every few hours. Ask your doctor about this approach to be sure you get enough calories and macro-nutrients.

Exercise TODAY, not tomorrow. If you can ride an exercise bike for one minute then do it and tomorrow try for two. Walking is a perfect way to lose weight if you have a lot to lose because it takes a tremendous amount of effort to move a large body around.
If you walk for 45 minutes in the morning and 45 minutes in the evening every single day it will be near impossible for you NOT to lose fat.

You must FEED your muscle and BURN your fat, it is the only way you will lose weight and keep it off.

Before you have surgery, be sure you understand not only the risks of dying immediately (a Freeper died last year from this surgery) but how drastically your life will change forever, even long after you have lost the weight.

You are smart to ask this question here as you will get lots of opinions for and against but in the end you will have to decide how you want to spend the rest of your life, not just the next year or so losing weight.

I wish you the best of luck and the best of health.

The best diet? No bread. None none none. Try going completely without starches for a couple of weeks. And NO BREAD. Drink lots of water. Go for long walks. Don't eat after 6pm.

Did I mention no bread?

I know the theory of the diet and it DOES make sense as far as training the mind. I also have had a long time battle with losing weight but what finally has worked for me was to buy nothing but these 230-320 calorie frozen dinners. I eat one every 3 - 4 hours and it works like a charm. After a week on the diet I actually get full after one small serving and I have lost 40 plus pounds in the past two months.

Plain and simple, fad diets and gizmos don't work.

That said, look into the "Three Hour Diet" by Jorge Cruise. It's not so much a diet as it is an eating plan. It's based on the fact that your body needs to eat every three hours. Plus you're not denying yourself "treats" which is why most diets fail in the long run.

But even that only works if you eat in moderation. Atkins, South Beach, etc. are good for quick weight loss, but the only thing that will help you lose weight and keep it off is a lifestyle change.

Do that, or something similar, push the water and get up and walk. Even if it's only a short distance. Do it regularly and you can build up your strength.

>I'm pretty desperate to lose weight...

I (obviously!)
recommend The FIRM system . . .
It worked great for me.

(I never sent them
money, just rented their tapes
from a neighborhood

video store and
used equipment that I owned.
I still do their stuff.)

http://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calculator.htm

Also, here is a great tool to determine how much you should be eating. Never go 1000 calories below your maintenance level as your body will think you are starving and slow your metabolism down.

2 or 3 pounds of fat loss per week doesn't seem like much when you have a lot to lose but it sure beats not losing or even gaining fat every week.
