I don't think was a typical search. You don't normally let suspects handle evidence like fingernails in the bathroom trashcan where a gang rape occurred.

The cops did not believe a gang rape had happened nor did they believe anyone would be charged. That matched the Duke Police paperwork and is the only explannation for the way the DPD executed the search warrant.

What worries me is that the whole case will be so drawn out and confusing, no one will be monitoring it for the year and a half to two years it takes to come to trial. I just shake my head when I think of the cost. I also hope the parents are keeping a watch over their son's emotional health. This is going to be a tough one.

Messages don't ever really get erased. I know someone who was being investigated by a federal agency. Voice mail messages that had been erased months earlier were retrieved. Records of cell calls, telephone numbers, times, etc. were all pulled up.
IMO she was "self-medicated" and all of her memories are fictional.
