Vanity: New FR Ping List "TechSupport"
2006-04-24 | N3WBI3

Posted on 04/24/2006 7:30:11 PM PDT by N3WBI3

Today a new ping list is starting on FreeRepublic, called TechSupport it will be a place for Freepers to get some help on problems that ight arise on their computers.

Why a list for this:

Some of the freepers who run or are involved in technical ping list find themselves with a good deal of mail from people asing about problems that many freepers might be able to and have more time to help with.

I have spoken to a few people who either run list or are involved on them and they fell this would accomplish three things. Firstly and most importantly get quick and responsive help to freepers who might. Secondly it will take the load off of any individual freeper from being a problem solver when they might have other things to do. Finally it will be a good place for non technical people who dont need help to educate themselves a bit more on how computers work.

Who Should Be on The List:

1) People who have expertise in any area of computing that are willing to lend a hand to help solve problems. Any area of computing will be a welcome addition to the list.

2) People who want to leanr by watching others work through problems.

How do I use The List:

To start with the list will be hosted Here (http://freerepublic.com/~n3wbi3/). In the section called TechSupport Ping copy the members of the list. Post a new message to the General/Chat section addressed to the members. This list is maintained be N3WBI3 but unlike other ping list any one (with a technical question) is free to post to the members.

Aright, add me to the ping list but my first response will always be PIBKAC.

Great idea you can add me. I won't be able to help anyone but I will undoubtedly learn from the misfortunes of others :-)

Maybe someone can tell me why I can't get my win98 machine to connect to my home network?

I'd sign up for this Ping list, but don't know how many "I have a virus -- is that a Bad Thing?" or "How do I make a picture appear on FR" questions I could put up with before going on a shooting rampage.

so it's probably better that I'm not on your list

Apparently a frustrated FReeper added a keyword for the technology challenged some time ago..."FRismypersonalITdept"

Martin, was that you, by any chance?;)

Martin is right, CDL.

A tiny little envelope appears in the lower task bar when there's email.

In terms of Eudora crashing, I've had lots of problems over the years with that--especially with my AMD dual CPU motherboard--if that is the issue, I don't know.

Got ANTICRASH software from Dachshund--great stuff.

Eudora personnel told me that Norton and a lot of others refuse to work with them to make Eudora and their software decrease crashes. Their attitude seems to be, reportedly, that Eudora is too small to bother with. Very snooty.

I tried Thunderbird several iterations ago and found it too clutzy and bothersome to put up with.

I still prefer all the features of Eudora.

Been up to Colo seeing JimRob et al. Sorry for slow response.

Thx.

May check it out again.

But need to get Norton reinstalled and Anticrash fixed first. LOL.

Lord knows, "Children ate my computer. Need help!!" IS News/Activism.

that said, it's a pretty funny keyword

True, but I think one of the best benefits is to avoid piece mealing things out one on one and let everyone learn from other's questions as well as reduce hassle of experts.

Good point. I like that approach.

Although for some reason Eudora has been crashing in a large way over the past 24 hours or so. So much so that I downloaded Thunderbird & am considering making the switch.

Martin,

I Eudora uses  the same file format they used to, your change to Thunderbird should be fairly painless. I don't know if there is a conversion utility out there, but it may well be possible to just copy your mbox files to Thunderbird and have them see them. When I made the move from Eudora, it was a pretty clean move, but I lost a little mbox meta information IIRC. I really liked Eudora. It was pretty clean software as long as you used the purchased copy. The adware stuff was obnoxious IMO.

Type "rm *" into the command line.

But it is so much fun watching your machine die!

Note I said your machine, not mine. :-)
