"Star Trek" Novel Dedicated to Cindy Sheehan
Pocket Books ^

I was in Borders tonight when I noticed the latest Star Trek novel, entitled "Last Full Measure." I admit to being a trekkie, and I know that the themes have always been very liberal. But I do like to read the stories.
This book however, I won't be buying, since one of the authors dedicated the book to Cindy Sheehan, for her tireless efforts (and I'm paraphrasing here) against the unjust administration and the unjust war that it has brought on in Iraq. I quickly decided that Pocket Books just cost themselves a sale.
Just thought I'd pass this along to fellow Trekkie freepers.

[There's no place for pacifists in free societies, for the uncritical pursuit of peace at any price gets every one killed.]
Very true.
With regard to the politics of Star Trek (especially TNG) "The Prime Directive" always irritated me. It commands that all alien societies are entitled to their way of life without interference from The Federation. Many episodes ended with "The Enterprise" leaving a planet after they stand by and allow some atrocity to take place in the name of "All cultural practices are equally moral" while they tut-tut about how it's too bad that such things have to happen.

Just ran across this:
J.J. Abrams to bring 'Star Trek' back to theatres
The new project, which will be the 11th instalment of the popular film series, will reportedly return to the origins of classic Trek characters James T. Kirk and Spock, originally portrayed by William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy.

Yeah, like the time on TNG when the Feds allowed Worf's brother's homeworld to die off rather than save the technologically-inferior society. To quote Lilly in First Contact, "where were your enlightened sensibilities then?"

Any trekkies here who are also interested in Doctor Who?
There is a new series, it has been on the SciFi channel, with a new doctor.
Yesterday's episode was interesting -- Broadcast news controlling people. LOL
http://www.tvsquad.com/2006/04/21/doctor-who-series-one-the-long-game/
"The Doctor, Rose and Adam land on Satellite 5, which broadcasts news of the entire Earth Empire (Yes! We're still great even in the future!). News gathering is performed by one person, whose brain is one big storage unit, while subordinates put the reports together using small mind chips. An 'Editor-in-Chief' oversees everyone on the satellite and in the entire empire through a control room manned by zombies."
(Of course the reviewer, being a liberal, likens it to FoxNews)
"It turns out that an alien has been manipulating the human race for nearly 100 years, as well as its news (pretty much like Rupert Murdoch and FOX News does today)."
====
Actually it's more like the MSM has been manipulating people, until FoxNews and the internet came along.

The Original Series was less politically correct. Captain Kirk simply overturned a planet's social order if he determined its people weren't free to decide their own destiny. None of that multicultural crap about respecting barbaric practices as being the equal of Western cultural mores.

Law and Order has gotten so liberal i cant watch it any more. Even with Fred Thompson there it is ridiculous.
Fred you need to speak up boy they are socking it to you.

Sounds like Abrams is a devotee to the original series. That's good.

Better to read L. Neil Smith's libertarian-anarchist stuff. Perhaps start with "Probability Broach".
I hope that someone makes it into a movie. Perhaps Bill Whittle could do something like that...

Forget Star Trek. Whatever they had, they have long since lost. And I speak as a former Trekkie myself.
Discover David Weber and the Honor Harrington series. Good conservative Science Fiction with strong moral values.
Check out baen.com -- go to the free library and read "On Basilisk Station".
You won't be sorry you did.

Not only that, but ALL the space chicks were hot and the intrepid Captain cut through them like a scythe through wheat. Heck, Bones and Scotty did a little exploration of their own every once in a while and even Spock let down his hair on at least one occasion.
