The Hobbit Hole XXIX - Until the stars are all alight...
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 04/20/2006 2:10:46 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Until the stars are all alight

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

What did Frodo do with Bag End (spelling?)

In the book, he gave it to Sam and RosieCotton. In the film, this isn't so clear.

... when Gandalf heads out for Gondor he tells Aragorn to come by a different route, the Black Ships. What did he mean?

He meant to take the Paths of the Dead, and go to the South and come up on the black ships of the Corsairs, which he did, even in the film, though it's meaning wasn't explained. The paths of the dead are pretty well explained in the film, they were warriors of old who were cursed to enternal undeath for breaking their oath to help fight for Gondor. The Corsairs and the black ships... I am not so sure of the history on them.

Others may be along to fill in more info:

The movies don't really tell us what Frodo did with Bag End. In the book, he sells it to the Sackville-Bagginses before he leaves with the Ring. Sam and Rosie Cotton move into Bag End after Frodo sails into the West.

Gandalf is telling Aragorn that he must go through the mountain and follow the Paths of the Dead. This is a part of Aragorn accepting his destiny (which he does more readily in the books). The Black Ships are those that you see attacking from the South. Aragorn leads the army of the dead to stop them. I forget how true that is to the book.

Hope that helps.

Well here's another potential boat gun...only it looks even more expensive than the version of it that I already like!

modified M-14 that I saw on another thread.

So even though it was Elrond who told him to use the army of the dead to go to battle, Gandalf was the one had the original idea?

Sorry if this is a lame question.

Quite true, actually. The Corsair ships pull up to Pellenor Field, but then Aragorn's banner unfurls from the mast and reveals that it is actually him his dudes arriving, not the Corsairs.

And then wonder took [Eomer], and a great joy; and he cast his sword up in the sunlight and sang as he caught it. And all eyes followed his gaze, and behold! upon the foremost ship a great standard broke, and the wind displayed it as she turned towards the Harlond. There flowered a White Tree, and that was for Gondor; but Seven Stars were about it, and a high crown above it, the signs of Elendil that no lord had borne for years beyond count. And the stars flamed in the sunlight, for they were wrought of gems by Arwen daughter of Elrond; and the crown was bright in the morning, for it was wrought of mithril and gold.

Thus came Aragorn son of Arathorn, Elessar, Isildur's heir, out of the Paths of the Dead, borne upon a wind from the Sea to the kingdom of Gondor; and the mirth of the Rohirrim was a torrent of laughter and a flashing of swords, and the joy and wonder of the City was a music of trumpets and a ringing of bells. But the hosts of Mordor were seized with bewilderment, and a great wizardry it seemed to them that their own ships should be filled with their foes; and a black dread fell on them, knowing that the tides of fate had turned against them and their doom was at hand.

In the book, though, the Dead Dudes do not accompany Aragorn to Pellenor, they are released from their curse after helping him capture the ships.

Not so much Gandalf's idea as it was Aragron's destiny, which Gandalf, Eldrond and Aragorn would have known.

In the book, it's Elrond who keeps reminding Aragorn of the "words of the seer," about the old prophecy regarding Isildur's heir who would return to walk the Paths of the Dead.

Cute, but I'd go with a long-eye-relief scope way forward on the handguard. You need something for quick target acquisition, not long-range shooting (on a rocking boat).

Thanks. I'm currently in The Two Towers. It's been a while.

Never have used one of these type scopes, but I'm sure you are right...I didn't think a scope was of any use at all at sea, but this one probably actually does work well, since I suppose you can see your target and the scope both at the same time.

They told me I couldn't renew a contract until the first one ended.

Doesn't sound right. We've done it twice since we got our very first cell phones about 4 years ago.

and that makes it easier for a visiting dog that didn't know very many tricks :~D

When my younger sister was feeling bad about putting Mama in the nursing home, her son said "Don't worry, Mom. Mimi won't remember the folks she met the day before, so she'll meet new friends every day!"

I'm pretty sure I've told this story before. My sister worked in a nursing home for a while. She had a patient who was raised as a Baptist, but converted to Jehovah's Witnesses when she was an adult. She raised her children as JWs.

When her mind started to go, she thought she was a Baptist again and wanted to participate in all the birthday and Christmas parties.

Drove her kids nuts.
