A cat saved the life of a newborn baby abandoned on the doorstep of a Cologne house in the middle of the night by meowing loudly until someone woke up, a police spokesman said on Saturday.
"The cat is a hero," Cologne police spokesman Uwe Beier said. "Its loud meowing got the attention of the homeowner and saved the baby from suffering life-threatening hypothermia. The homeowner opened door to see why the cat was making so much noise and discovered the newborn."
Beier said the boy was taken to hospital at 5 a.m. on Thursday, when overnight temperatures fell toward zero, and had suffered only mild hypothermia. He said there was no indication of what happened to the boy's mother.
For every Hero Cat story, there are 500 Hero Dog stories!!
"Smart and compassionate" kitty PING.
And any number of dog mauling stories, many of them resulting in death and many more resulting in permanent disfigurement. I love dogs, but I also love cats. Let's not demean either one.
Yes, that is true about bad dogs.
I like cats as well, I wasn't trying to demean them...(or at least I didn't mean to come across that way)

The cat was probably freezing too and was meowing to get himself let into the house. It probably had nothing to do with the baby. I have had lots of cats and 'it's all about them'.
If your cat is meowing and giving you a lot of attention, he is saying "feed me you fool".
hmmmm, much as I love cats, it's probable that what was going through the cat's mind was this, "This baby is 1) making too much racket and I can't hear the mice or 2) this smells like I should eat it but it's too big, come out and chop it up for me.
Except if he's already GOT food, how do you explain that?
He was probably meowing for the owners to come kick this thing off its stoop. I know, I have cats. ;-)
The cat was cold.
Let's split the difference. Cats really don't like change -- this "change" was large enough to have the cat call the servants to handle the problem.
Not when there's a nice electric heated cat bed nearby. Try again. :)
"In this era of hyper-sensitivity and political-correctness, words no longer have meaning. Those who are good are too often portrayed as evil; indefensibly wicked acts are made less so by the way they are described. Words like 'hero' and 'hatred' have lost definition. In the midst of a struggle for survival, the inability to discern attackers from allies, friends from foes and heroes from cowards is potentially catastrophic. ... The word 'hero' no longer means one who has willingly put himself in grave physical jeopardy for the benefit of another. Heroes are people who overcome evil by doing good at great personal risk. Through self-sacrifice, fortitude and action -- whether they succeed or fail -- heroes provide a moral and ethical framework -- and inspiration -- for the rest of us. Unfortunately, our modern definition of 'hero' has been corrupted to include all manner of people who do not warrant the title. The athlete who just set a new sports record isn't a hero. Nor is the 'daring' movie star or even the adventurer out to be the first solo climber to scale Mt. Everest. They may be brave -- but they don't meet the definition of a hero, for whatever they achieve benefits only 'self.' Real heroes are selfless." attributed to Oliver North
A nice, touching and lovely story, but no wonder that the Germans have sunk as low as they have - to attribute noble human characteristics to non humans.
I don't know why the cat was meowing but I have had dozens and dozens of cats, they don't do heroic things for others out of the goodness of their hearts.
Mine attacks solicitors who come to the door - but he leaves guests alone.
Yours attacks strangers.
No, because he doesn't attack strangers that I invite in.
Good kitty.
