Police Clock Teacher at Over 100 Mph

Thu Apr 13, 5:49 PM ET

FARGO, N.D. - A teacher on her way to school in South Dakota was caught speeding at more than 100 mph, thanks to a tip from a driver who said the woman had been routinely passing him at triple-digit speeds, authorities say.

Heather Jo Smith, 25, of Fargo, was clocked at 102 mph on Wednesday near the Horace exit on Interstate 29, Cass County Sheriff's Capt. Mike Argall said.

Smith was driving a car that is owned by the Northeast Educational Co-op in Hayti, S.D., Argall said.

Smith did not immediately return a telephone message seeking comment Thursday that was left at her office. A message left at a Fargo listing for Heather Jo Smith was not immediately returned.

"We got a tip from a gentleman who said he had been passed by a small, dark car with South Dakota plates at least five times in the last month going more than 100," Argall said.

The man called authorities on Tuesday to report the driver. The next day, a deputy was posted along the highway near Horace, where the man said he had been passed by the speeding vehicle, each time at around 8 a.m.

"As luck would have it, there was a small, dark car with South Dakota plates heading south at more than 100," Argall said.

Smith was pulled over shortly before 8 a.m.

Tips about speeders rarely result in a ticket because the driver is long gone before a deputy can respond, Argall said. "This was a good one," he said.

Smith was issued a ticket for $135 and assessed 10 of the 12 points on her North Dakota driver's license, Argall said.

Smith's employer also was contacted. Smith works as a speech pathologist at the school, Argall said.

"We talked to her supervisor and he was appreciative," Argall said. "Hopefully, they will take interest in her driving because we sure did."

She should've done some fast talking.

I have noticed over the past years that younger women have become more aggresive in their driving and highly likely to exceed the speed limits.

If a teacher leaves Fargo travelling south at 102 mph at 8 a.m., how long will it take for her to wind up in the county jail?

  1. Sooner than she thinks
  2. C
  3. All quantum states are unknowable and in perpetual flux
  4. None of the above

If the place is anything like Nebraska, that is not that much faster than I would drive it. Speed limit 75 + 15 over = 90mph.

When automobile driving was a relatively new phenomenom, "woman drivers" were not very skilled at driving, lacking the mechanical abilities that men were routinely trained to have.

By the 1960s, women were not only driving in greater numbers, but they were (in my opinion), generally safer drivers than men. Women were being trained in high school driving classes, and took safety more seriously than men-a least young men.

Many women now are very aggressive drivers, though not in the percentages that men are. Progress?

Unless she is swerving, riding people's tails, or doing something outrageous, I'd like to smack the person who tipped police. I've met my fair share of holier-than-thou drivers that ride the left lane at or below the speed limit to teach us sinners a lesson.

I imagine the tipster looking like this

Sorry, but going over 100 mph is beyond simple speeding. You can come up on someone so fast that they don't anticipate your speed and move over into your lane - and you have almost no time to react and an ungodly amount of momentum involved at that speed.

100 mph is not an ungodly speed. If it were, many local cops would be dead! Besides, it's South Dakota and pretty safe to say that SD is short of drivers on long stretches of desolate highway. Shoot it happened all the time at 3 AM in always congested NJ with a certain motorcyclist that woke me up. Here in Oklahoma, we regularly see 100 mph. No one even blinks so long as the driver is not a jerk.

Nah, I'm still thinking the tipster is Hans Moleman-like, or a holier-than-thou-type.

Sorry, but momentum = 1/2 mv squared - so at that speed, a crash is catastrophic. And cops have warning lights on their cars so people see them coming.

I assume you would report the teacher.

The cops driving 100+mph usually do not have lights on. Since I'm buddies with them, many times they're driving 100 mph or more as civilians.

100 mph is not an ungodly speed. I've driven over 100 many times--most of the episodes in NJ where the limit was the heavenly 55 mph. But since I've moved to Oklahoma, I usually drive between 65 to 80 (Oklahoma limit is 75).

I wouldn't, but I don't blame someone for doing such.

100 in that part of the coutry isn't all that fast.
At 100mph a person passes another car every 10 minuites.
