A CUSTOMER says she found a dead frog in a pre-mixed Caesar salad bought from a Brisbane supermarket.
Julie Lumber, of Springfield in Brisbane's west, today said she was preparing for a barbecue when the green intruder dropped out of a Caesar salad "with the works" bought from Coles at the weekend.
"I opened up the bag and the frog fell out on the side of the plate.
"I just went 'oh my god' and then we had a laugh about it.
"I couldn't stomach French food with the frogs legs and snails and I wasn't about to try it the other day."
Luckily the five-centimetre frog, which died clinging to a green lettuce leaf with its left leg outstretched, was found before the barbecue got under way on Saturday evening.
"There were a few of us in the kitchen - luckily other people were with me to see it because you wouldn't want people to think you put it in there," Ms Lumber said.
"We were worried it could go undetected because of the green colour of the lettuce and the green colour of the frog and that's why we contacted Coles."
She said she took a photo of her unusual salad before returning the package, frog and all, to Coles at Springfield Fair.
"I took it back with the frog and got a full refund - the supermarket's management said they would send it off to (their) quality assurance (department) and they gave me a receipt number (so I can track its progress)."
Ms Lumber is a packer at Australia Meat Holdings at Dinmore, west of Brisbane.
"If we did that we would be in trouble ... to miss a whole dead frog," Ms Lumber said.
"I'll make my own salads from now on because at least I can wash the lettuce myself.
"I (still) love French dressing, I always put it on my salads - just not that type."
A Coles Springfield Fair duty manager would not comment on the incident.
Put the frog on the barbie.
Kiss that damn frog and turn him into a primce!
Is this a union run supermarket? If so - shop non-union...
Maybe the frog is a cheap substitute for anchovies.
I'm not surprised to find him there. Chirac is a cabbage head--- and these aren't exactly salad days for France right now.
Hey, she said she wanted it "with the works".
