New 'Ten Commandments' Makes Moses All Too Human

"I was really impressed with [DeMille's version] when I saw it as a young boy, because it was such a wonderful cinematic extravaganza ... Just because there has been this huge, colossal canvas painted with one man's vision doesn't mean we can't retell it."

That may be true, the in terms of cinamatography alone, I feel this new production falls short.

That's all we need, a Moses full of doubts and Angst.

"I had three different religious advisers, a Muslim, a Christian and a rabbi, going through every word of the script."

What, no atheist adviser? And how about a Darwinist?

On the contrary, this version makes Moses and Pharaoh and others much more believeable than the thundering Heston extravaganza.

DeMille's 10 Commandments looks schlocky in comparison.

Halmi's own interest in revisiting the story of the Exodus arose from his conviction that great stories need to be retold for new generations every 35 years or so.

There you go, folks--that's why Hollywood can't make a unique movie: they have to keep retelling the old ones every 35 years.

Jesus was full of doubts and angst, especially on the eve of His Crucifixion.

Certainly Moses was as well. That's what makes the Faith of both so admirable and real.

Are you saying he didn't have doubt? It was quite clear when he spoke with God at the burning bush he not only had doubts, he flat out didn't want to go. Matter of fact, Moses argued with God for a chapter and a half about going (Exodus 3-4) in the first place. I'm pretty sure he didn't just drop that doubt at that moment for it never to arise again.

Man, I'd be glad if they waited 35 years to remake some of these dogs :P

That's one story that should constantly be retold!

Isn't the fascination with Moses the fact that he was a prophet constantly rejected and unappreciated by his own people? That's enough to fill one with doubts.

I just thought the "parting of the sea" part was a bit tacky. Towering underwater rocks and all.

Did like the fighting snakes part though.

Not familiar with the Darwinist religion? You see it on bumper stickers all the time.

I think he was full of doubt and angst. Didn't he nag God a bit, trying to get out of the role that God has planned for him? "I'm not a leader, I speak with a stutter, I'm short & homely, I walk with a limp, who the heck is going to follow me?"

Can you imagine in our times if someone went hiking for a few days up in the Mountains and came down to say God spoke to them via a burning bush and turned their walking stick into a snake?

How soon would we all be ???? if this person was psychotic from a manic episode or worse accuse them of being a meth "tweek".

I am sure those God chose did get flak. Job (just read it last week) got a lot of flak from his friends about all the mental and physical suffering he went through, surely they said you have sinned against God to have all these afflictions. Yet it is written he never shook his fist in anger at God.

Then good ole King David who murdered, had quite a time with the ladies was promised a place in the Kingdom of God because despite his killing someone and womanizing his heart was truly remorseful and dedicated to doing God's way.

Then again the Jewish folks had 619 commandments so I see where God cleaned that up to 10. Just studying the 10 myself and find it interesting when you break down each one how much they encompass.

Good Point.
Moses did not have a big ego, was not boastful and worried about his vanity.

What would Paris Hilton do?(kidding)
