The latest issue of DreamWatch features an interview with actor Richard Hatch, who played Captain Apollo in the original Battlestar Galactica TV Series and now plays Tom Zarek in the Galactica remake.
Hatch talked about how he continues to feel that a continuation of the original series would have been just as successful as the Ronald D. Moore's re-imagining.
"I don't think a continuation would have been any less successful than a re-imagining," he stated firmly. "A continuation would have evolved the original show: it would have updated the Cylons, brought new characters in and gone into equally provocative areas. We could have had Eddie Olmos as the Commander, Mary as President, Jamie [Bamber] as Apollo's son, and Katee [Sackhoff] as Starbuck's Daughter. And we would have loved to have brought Ron Moore onboard too."
"A continuation would have had the best of both worlds it would have had the values and positives of the old show but would have updated them for today. It also wouldnt have had the problems the new show had in the beginning, when fans of the original felt upset and disappointed."
Additionally, a few years ago, Hatch created a visual proof-of-concept by executive producing, co-scripting, co-directing, and acting in Battlestar Galactica: The Second Coming. This is a 4-1/2 minute, professional film trailer by Hatch which illustrated his concepts for a new Battlestar Galactica TV Series or movie continuation of the original series.
More from Hatch can be found at Sci Fi Pulse.
Richard Hatch is a talented man, and a great actor. He pretty much developed the Tom Zarek character by himself (acc. to Ronald D. Moore).
Still and all, this should be taken as pipe dreaming. First off, if timelines were followed, Adama's character would probably be as dead as Loren Green. That would probably mean that Col. Tigh (depends on whether it's Michael Hogan...character is older than TNS Adama... or Terry Carter...younger than TOS Adama), or perhaps Apollo himself would command Galactica after a generation has passed.
IIRC, Boxey in TOS was Apollo's son. Somehow i just can't see Jamie Bamber playing Boxey.
The one thing that i did like about the reimaging was getting rid of the "aristrocratic" nature of Adama and his family. Adama is a better character as a gruff old Navy guy.
Have to say that the Cylons have improved in quality as well, both the "skin jobs" (especially the 'women'), as well as the "toasters". The Centurians look MUCH more menacing than did TOS Cylons, Thank God for CGI, and in the case of the female Skin Jobs, Victoria's Secret.
The screen time doesn't matter, it's the impact. When I was a kid, the original BSG opening was very effective. As an adult, I started fast-forwarding through the new BSG miniseries. The yammering of that scary-looking Cyclon chick was booooring and the whole show is pretty pretentious.
I know that the Cyclon chick is being pushed as a hottie, but I think people are just following the trend. She looks like Gary Busey's son in drag. I don't care for the starved look and she has scary teeth. Plus, the idea is a direct ripoff of Farscape, which used the idea much better, IMHO.
I heard about the new BSG and it sounded like it was right up my alley, but it's boring, that's all there is to it. The episodes I watched were too much part of the ongoing story to be of individual interest (though the one or two eps of 24 I've seen were excellent on their own), and the whole show has this miserable, mopey tone about it I just couldn't get into.
That's the problem. There was no impact. Watching it as a kid it was neat because it was science fiction, but looking at it as an adult, it was terrible and that does not count any of the special effects (which were great at the time).
Sure, I get your point. I just thought the original got the point across without all the pretentious stuff. But to each his own, people really seem to like the new BSG, though i've already gotten the sense that some think it's jumping the shark.
Ditto. I like the grittier feel of the re-imaged show. I consider them to have happened in two separate universes...
If you'll notice, there are few here who request photos of the blonde. Grace Park pictures, however, are practically mandatory.
I'd like to see it!
Mr. Hatch if you are lurking -- please post your demo on the web.
He's just mad because he isn't a main character anymore.
His idea is all great, But where would that leave the current Boomer, Played by Grace Park?
Nah. Any show that has asteroids with atmospheres needs to die. I seen the project, and I liked it, but BSG re-imagined has (had?) a lot more potential.
That said, the writers of the current BSG are stupid beyond belief. I have only seen the stuff on DVDs, but I also follow the BSG group. The writers don't have a clue about the military, convoys, shipboard discipline, computers, etc. This season's finale was absolutely moronic. I think they're addicted to cheap drama and loathing the military.
I take it that Dirk Benedict doesn't like the new one? Has he stated why?
Ooops. Grammar. I SAW Hatch's new BSG project...
I'm assuming it's a dream/vision that the President is having that will lead her to decide to go ahead and "fix" the election for the good of the human race.
The guy is a real winner.
He was interviewed along with Katie Sakhof (sp?), who is the new Starbuck, and seemed to be okay with the show.
He later came out and said he thought the new show was tripe, and despised the fact that Starbuck was a woman.
I just can't wait till the A-team makes a come back. He'll really throw a hissy fit then.
There was nothing anti-military in the season finale, or the show as a whole. The president said "stand down" so they did. The military answers to the civilian government because that's how things are supposed to be. Even if the civilian goverment is wrong they still run the show. People voted for Baltar because Baltar promised they'd stop running, after living in tin cans and fleeing for their lives for the last 6 months the pople were tired, it was the wrong decision but it was their decision.
According to Moore the season finale was about putting to bed the "original" plot line. Basically he felt he'd done as much as he could with the "fleeing from the Cylons looking for Earth that they're never going to find before the last episode anyway" plot and it was time to move to the plot he really wanted to do and was why he took on this project in the first place.
How are they anti-military?
Of course any opinion as to their representations of military, such as the convoys and shipboard discipline forgets that this isn't our military, and things would likely be done differently in a completely different society. And add to that the fact that the Galactica was the dregs of the fleet, and that the Pegasus was run by a wannabe Col Kurtz.
