FReeper Teens Chat
Original | March 29, 2006 | Tax-chick

Posted on 03/29/2006 6:44:49 AM PST by Tax-chick

My daughter "Anoreth" and some of her conservative friends asked me to start a chat thread for them to discuss books, music, guns, education, whichever, and whatall. All young FReepers are welcome to join in.

This thread has the same premise as the "Undead Thread" - general discussion - only with a content level suited to younger people, if you get my drift. If there are many posts, a new thread can be started when the volume starts interfering with the programming.

I'll be stopping by now and then to keep an eye on things. Please read and follow the FR posting guidelines!

I just looked at your mom's profile to check your list o' siblings. Wow! That's a lot of kids to keep you company. Looks like you're the only teen though, and the oldest one (just like moi)

I went to the 11 a.m. mass. My mom always wants to me to go with her the 7 a.m. mass where she heads the rosary society. No way -- not gonna happen. Weekends I can SLEEP!

You'll have to explain to me how home schooling works sometime. Do you have a private tutor stop by on certain days? Do you have due dates and a fixed curriculum that meets the guides of the state board of Education? Do your parents go over it all?

I graduated from a public H.S., then went to a community college (Moraine Vallege), and then tranfered to a private, four year "arts school" college ("Columbia" -- the one in Illinois, not the other two in New York and South Carolina) Since I've never attended a religious-run school, I'm thinking of doing a Catholic University (maybe Notre Dame?) when I get my master's degree someday.

Can my inner child join in? It might keep him from TP'ing the neighbor's house.

We went to 5:00, when it's (usually) less crowded and James and Pat can yell without being noticed as much.

We sit in the back.

My mom teaches the younger kids. I usually do my own work without much trouble, but she looks into it to make sure I'm doing it correctly and to help if needed. Sometimes my dad will help, usually with math or computer stuff.

I'm wanting to go to Oklahoma State University to take meteorology, although I'm likely to end up going to UNCC or whatever the local college is at the time anyway. If I was going to a Catholic College, it'd be Steubenville (Franciscan University) in Ohio.

Hey you're one kewl chicka. ;-) Mind if I veer off pop culture for a sec and ask you some more political questions? Most single females under are nortoriously liberal (even the female Republican Senators tend to wishy-washy types like your Senator in NC)... since you're a FReeper teen are you a solid conservative like your mom?

I'll give some of stances on basic issues, and you can reply in kind:

Education – I think people ought to be allowed to attend the school they wish and I support school vouchers and home schooling. I support individual school prayer. I oppose affirmative action and letting illegal aliens attend school here with “in-state” tuition rates. They’re foreign nationals and if they can’t afford it they should go to college in their own country!

Abortion - I’m pro-life and I would outlaw all abortions except I would ALLOW (but not recommend) it if the woman was raped or her life was in danger. I would NOT allow abortion just because of “incest”, like if she and her cousin were doing nasty stuff and she got pregnant.

Gay Rights – I really don’t have a problem with what two people do in private but I’m totally against them forcing other people to recognize it and have the government fund it. I mean if you had a gay couple he could just leave all his money to his “partner” in a living will so what’s the problem?

Free Trade -- I’m mixed on this one. I’m generally for free trade but I don’t support free trade with communist nations that abuse human rights (China, Cuba, etc.) I think we should have more free trade agreements with like-minded countries though, like all Englsih-speaking western nations.

Guns – I used to think gun control was a good idea when I was a kid, but then I found out Chicago has banned guns since 1979 and the have more gun murders than anywhere. It doesn’t work. I support letting people own guns and conceal them as long as they take training on how to use them. I don’t have a problem with background checks.

Social Security – I think social security should be optional and anyone under 30 should be allowed to bail out and invest their retirement money in any kind of system they wish.

Taxes – Our current tax system sucks. I think it should be replaced with a national flat tax, like the one Steve Forbes promoted.

Immigration – All illegal aliens should be deported and receive no benefits except emergency care. Period. I favor building a moat between the UN and Mexico (connecting the Gila River to the Rio Grande) and putting the national guard on the border.

Death Penalty – I support the death penalty for murder except in cases where the person who committed the murder is severely retarded and so on. I think we should have mutiple methods of execution, nationwide.

Abstinence – Well I discussed this one in Freepmail, didn’t I? ;-/

Sorry. Couldn't get online for a bit.

'Kay.....let's see. Yes I am solid conservative, pro-life, Catholic and...what've I missed...creationist.
My liberal friends tend to refer to me as "the right-wing nutcase." I respond with "You have no idea."

Education - People can do what they like. I would prefer it if people could read, write, do math, and type, of course, but..
Abortion: I think I answered that before. I'm strictly anti-abortion. If someone's been raped, there's plenty of people who'd love to adopt.
Gay people - Who the hell cares what they do? They're fruit bats anyway. As long as they aren't doing anything in public... (ew)
Free Trade - Nothing to say about this, as I haven't really looked into that at all.
Guns - I'm all for 'em. Not only are they good for self-protection, there's also hunting and other sports, collecting, and drooling over them in catalongs. *grin*
Social Security - Again, haven't looked into that much.
Taxes - I've read plenty about that, and, although alot went right over my head (Thomas Sowell), I still think people who use things like public schools should pay for them themselves, instead of people who are homeschooling or don't even have school-age children.
Immigration - We agree on this. I don't mind immigrants in our country, but only if they go about it the right way, instead of sneaking. It's better for them if they don't sneak over anyway, as they can get jobs and stuff.
Death Penality - The firing squad is a good idea, especially for murderers, drug dealers, etc. Otherwise, I don't care alot.

Still, a firing squad is cleaner than an electric chair or a gas chamber (not suggesting we have or use them, just giving an example. Don't eat me!)
Abstinence - What you said. I don't really want to get into it much.

LOL! I guess they won't want me here, then.

But it is a great thread -- I look forward to checking in on our next gen FReepers :)

So far I am happy to see that young conservatives seem to be extremely intelligent with great senses of humor (amazing how those go hand-in-hand).

If you're smart, you realize how goofy life really is, and then you either laugh or go nuts!

I need to try to get my youngest to sleep - you have a good evening!

Young man, I must ask that you not make further attempts to contact my daughter privately. You are significantly older than she is, and any topics even remotely appropriate for discussion can be addressed in public posts.

Thanks very much for your cooperation!

Hey, I apologize for offending you. I got a brother her age so I know how careful parents have to be.

I freep mailed her a week ago before our FR chat but I haven't made any more "attempts to contact her privately" I agree that's inapporipiate to do behind your back. The topics I brought up on FReepmail were repeated in the public forim when she said you wanted it kept to FR teen chat.

I think she's a pretty cool girl though and I appriciate you letting us chat on FR.

Thanks your for understanding! :-> Bill

Well it looks like I struck a nerve with your mom so I'll be on my best behavior from now on. ::blushes::

I must say... wow! You're to the RIGHT of me on a lot of issues. One time I did one of those tests to determine my place on the political spectrum, 0% being total liberal and 100% being total conservative, and I rated 88% conservative. Of course when I attended college I was surrounded by left-wing gaia worshippers (President Bush finshed THIRD in our college presidential poll, losing to the Dem AND Ralph Nader), so by their standards I'm a far-right wing extermist. lol.

Hey your mom calls our hard rock music music "dreadful". Well I like most music but I find country "music" (a.k.a., hicks bellowing "wooooooooo-weeeeeeee!" into a mic) to be dreadful... so I cant' say I'm a big fan of the North Carolina music scene. Southern ROCK music kicks butt though. ;-)

I appreciate your understanding of our concerns, and you're welcome to chat about any FR-legal topics :-). Well, within reason ...

We're heading into testing season here, so nobody's going to be online much!

My mom dislikes most rock music. She can stand Evanescence , but everything else I have to keep the door closed for.

"Country" music is ok for short times. Country rock is good, though. I like Toby Keith and Confederate Railroad best. Steve Earl is also good, even though he's a druggie fruit bat.

Well I've been online everyday but I haven't posted here in a while either. You say you won't be on too much because of testing? Hmmm. Don't most H.S. kids take finals in late May? lol. I'm confused.

Out of the groups you listed, the only one I really like is Toby Keith, but I suppose I'm a fan of some of those old timer acts like Lynyrd Skynyrd ("Sweet Home Alabama")

I never really buy CDs though (except stuff that's hard to come by like the soundtrack for Tommy), instead I just rely on my good ol' MP3 player (it's a Creative MuVo, not an IPod) and "borrowed" music. Heh heh. You got an MP3 player?

Back on the political topics...you know what amazes me, (and maybe your mom can help explain this one) is North Carolina is a very conservative state yet pretty much all the statewide officials (minus the two Senators) are Democrats...what's up with that? The Republicans just run sucky candidates or you got a bunch of people saying "I vote Democrat cuz my granddaddy was a Democrat" or what? lol.

That's what's on my mind at the moment. lol. I tend to ramble on aimlessly as you might have noticed. ;-)

Take care and hope you had a good Easter. (I did, in fact, I made the chicken caesar salad for my mom)

My mom said we'd be testing in May. I don't know exactly when in May, though. My HS friends up the street did theirs last week.

I don't have an mp3 player, although I want one. I have a little portable CD player, a pair of broken earbuds (one side didn't work, so I pulled it off and just use the other one,) and a big CD/FM radio. My mom doesn't want me to have anything that uses headphones, due to my liking for turning it up loud.
I do borrow music for the computer though. My friend has an mp3, so I jsut pull anything new off there. Mostly I have Linkin Park, Evanescance, and The Rasmus. And one Zombie song.

Hmm......from what I know, NC has sucky Democrats everywhere because the Republican Party here is weak. At least, that's what I've picked up. Either that or North Carolinians are just stupid as a rule (no offence, people.)
