FReeper Teens Chat
Original | March 29, 2006 | Tax-chick

Posted on 03/29/2006 6:44:49 AM PST by Tax-chick

My daughter "Anoreth" and some of her conservative friends asked me to start a chat thread for them to discuss books, music, guns, education, whichever, and whatall. All young FReepers are welcome to join in.

This thread has the same premise as the "Undead Thread" - general discussion - only with a content level suited to younger people, if you get my drift. If there are many posts, a new thread can be started when the volume starts interfering with the programming.

I'll be stopping by now and then to keep an eye on things. Please read and follow the FR posting guidelines!

(But the best is lye (drano) and aluminum foil. If you ever want a good backyard experiment, play with mixing those. Highly exothermic. Yummy)

I don't think I'll ever look back on my teenage years and wish that I had had any of the above... it's just a hassle.

Hey thanks for the quick reply!

I'm sorry I missed the earlier chat. As I noted earlier, I suppose I don't really count as a "teen" since I'm in my 20s now, but I did join this forum back in H.S.! (And during my H.S. debate class, I lead the "pro-impeach Clinton" side)

So Anoreth, nice to meet another conservative Catholic who's so interested in politics and religion. It's amazing how ignorant most people are! My "girlfriend" (well if you can call her that, it's not a serious relationship) can't even name her own governor!

Did you know there are different kinds of Catholics? People all seem to think their are various protestant types but all Catholics are Roman Catholics. Not so. I'm considering switching from the Roman rite to the Byzantine rite. I recently visited a Byzantine Catholic church and the whole mass and rituals are very much like a Greek Orthodox church BUT they do follow Catholic doctrine and are under the Pope! Pretty neat, eh? My parents STILL don't get it, they think I want to switch religions ::rolls eyes::

I noticed you're into sci-fi books too. Two of my recent favs are "Snow Crash" (which I had to read in college), about a future society where Internet avatars have become full virtual reality and being in an online world with your avatar has become an addictive drug for some... and I'm currently reading "State of Fear", by Michael Crichton, about a group of environmental extremists who can't get enough funding for their "cause" so they CREATE actual environmental disasters to scare the public into supporting their "cause". It's a very subtle swip at liberals! I sent "Snow Crash" to my friend Krystal.

Another topic -- You mentioned liking Rob Zombie for more than just his "horror" theme in his music... so have you seen any of the movies he directed? I like his art direction but I'd say his storytelling leaves much to be desired. Have you listened to the white zombie stuff before he went solo?

FINALLY,I figure you guys are "traditional" conservatives like most of us on this board but what are your thoughts on hot button issues like stem cell research and intelligent design? I'm totally against killing human embryos for "research", so far they've come up with nothing concrete and the media doesn't seem to want to report that all kinds of work has been using ADULT stem cells. But as for "intelligent design", I just think it's a new way of saying "creationism" and I'm against teaching it as "science" in public schools. I think they can teach it all they want in religion classes but there's no way to "research" it either way so why force one's religious beliefs on everyone in the classroom? Also I'm tired of hearing that pro-evolution people are liberals. The biggest creationist on the planet was William J. Bryan in the 1890s, and he was a liberal Democrat.

Wow! As you can see, once I start rambling, I don't know when to stop! There's at least four or five topics there that you could take all day trying to reply to!

Penny for your thoughts?

Yeah, I've heard of other Catholics, although I always thought they were a little wierd. My and mom are going to a Greek Orthodox church tomorrow (Friday) just for the experience.

"Snow Crash" sounds interesting. I have visions of my avatars walking around Carolina Place mall. Scary.

I haven't seen any Rob Zombie movies, although I imagine they're pretty weird. I saw the Dragula music video, which was...strange. Very.

I'll get back to you later on that last topic. Mom wants me off.

Speaking of avatars, I just changed my AIM one to a talking President Bush in order to annoy my liberal friends. ;-)

I'll give you a breather while you look over all my other questions. lol. You're a pretty kewl chick.

My avatars tend to consist of characters from Sci-fi and Fantasy TV shows, so....

Let's see. Stem cell research? I'm not really up-to-date on that..it didn't interest me all that much..but from the little I've read about it it seems they might as well use adult cells for it if it works the same way as using embryos. As I said, I don't really know much about that.

Creation science. (or 'intelligent design, whichever you prefer)
I believe that God created the world as it says in the Bible. In my opinion, they can just teach science in schools, especially public, and leave 'Why are we here' as a question students can have their own opinion on. If it causes so many problems, just skip it and let them research the queston and believe what they like.

That's alrite, my grammer tends to suck when I post online. ;-)

Maybe I should stick to the whole sci-fi/fantasy/horror topic... I'm a HUGE sci-fi geek but I'm not too keen on fantasy (my younger brother is the fantasy guy and he plays Everquest, World of Warcraft, watches Harry Potter, readers those Eragon novels and so on...)

Right now I'm in the process of collecting all of the Quantum Leap on DVD (you probably missed it during it's original run in the early 90s... great show!) I'm also a major trekkie (probably shouldn't discuss that around girls... people tend to sterotype "nerd!"), and I like Twilight Zone (all three incarnations), and lately I've been trying to get into Silders and Farscape.

One of the things that struck me as interesting is your profile says you know someone who's a werewolf...what's up with that?? When my dad worked for the Cook Co. Sheriff's Office, he once interviewed a guy they arrestead and he asked if the guy had any strange diseases, and the guy answered "Lycanthropy". Sooo my dad was like "You mean to say you're a WEREWOLF? I really don't have time for this crap" lol. Personally I'm more into the whole vampire culture... maybe that explains why I'm partial to Anne Rice novels and movies like "The Lost Boys" (I swear some teen cliques seem like vampire cults!)

I dunno...is this really appropiate for FR? We are a "conservative" forum after all! ;-)

They call me "The Science Fiction Geek" at camp. I used to be into fantasy but I've found that science fiction tends to be a little better written (if nothing else.) My little brothers are into that stuff though, Eragon and Redwall and Harry Potter. I did read those (I introduced those, actually), but Timothy Zahn and Liegh Brackett are just..better. I don't see many science fiction TV shows. I have seen all the Star Wars movies and a couple Stargates, and I'm trying to persuade my parents to let me see Star Trek. Yea, I have a friend up the street who's a werewolf. I read some vampire stuff (mostly things my brother checks out), but I like werewolves better. I liked Red Rider especially, that was cool (if slightly pre-teenish) book. I doubt anyone's gonna notice we're here unless they're teenagers.

Well I suppose this thread's gotten pretty quiet except you and me. :-D

Anyhoo... I always liked sci-fi better than fantasy because sci-fi is more about our existing universe and what COULD happen whereas fantasy exists on another realm and is about what you dream about happening.

I really consider Star Wars to be science fantasy since it's more of a classic damsel-in-distress story with a futuristic setting. I liked Revenge of the Sith, A New Hope, and Empire Strikes Back... the rest of 'em were too hokey for me, though Revenge of the Jedi is better after watching Sith explain the past that Revenge hinted at.

The Star Trek universe, on the other hand, is so big that it's hard to "get into" if you're not familar with it. The general rule is the even numbered movies are better than the odd ones. If you rent some, I recommend watching 2,3,4 (all in a row, they work as a trilogy), then 6... and then forget about those and watch 8 and 10. (8 and 10 are called "First Contact" and "Nemesis") The problem is that Star Trek 2 is not really a sequel to the first Star Trek movie (which was a boring "2001" ripoff,) but a sequel to an episode of the TV series called "Space Seed". Have I lost you already? lol. Star Trek has had some pretty cool guest stars over the years, like Andy Dick, Christian Slater, and Ron Pearlman.

I'd say we have alot in common with our tastes in genre, just we're seen different franchises.

Well I better get off to bed now, I have to go to church for Palm Sunday and I imagine you do as well...

Hey you have a pretty cool family, much bigger than mine... I'm amazing your mom finds time to do all that stuff your siblings. I have two younger siblings... how many do you have again?

It looks like your mom has a pic of you on her profile but it's kinda small and looks outdated... any chance you can send me a recent one? I sent you my myspace profile, so it's only fair.

Thanks! Rock on ;-)

I liked all the Star Wars movies pretty well except for Episode 2, which was cheesy even for George Lucas. 1 was pretty good, and 3 was okay. Very depressing. I guess my favorite is The Empire Strikes Back.

We're going to church in the evening, when it's not as crowded. I have 7 younger siblings.

I don't have any current pictures of me, as I hate cameras (or at least the picture-taking end), so I don't get many pictures.

You can see a picture of me as a dragon, if you like, however. ;D
