Katherine M. - "I Will Always Love You" Dolly Parton/Whitney Houston
I hope she doesn't sing that. Could be painful unless Katharine gives us a laidback lounge performance of it. Could be deadly dull if she does give us a lounge performance of it. If she sings it the way I expect her to sing it, she'd better be in fine voice.
"At Last" seems pretty decent for Paris. I'm impressed with that kid and don't think she has turned in a weak performance, yet. Went back and listened to Billie Holiday's, Sarah Vaughn's, Dinah Washington's, and Ella Fitzgerald's versions of "These Foolish Things"; hard to believe, but Paris's version stacks up pretty well.
"A Song for You" seems perfect for Elliott's voice. I'm not familiar with the song and have only heard a brief audio clip. Is it a good enough song to help Elliott in the voting, is what I'm wondering. It'd be cool to hear him sing "Unchained Melody" though.
Hmmm...so Taylor may be dropping the G-bomb this week. Hope so.
Chris has a good voice for doing Aerosmith songs. Should work.
Kellie P. - "Because You Loved Me"
I think she might do well with that. Seems like it would be within her ability, anyways.
I'm not sure I buy Chris's choice. VERY obvious. Same with Taylor. Too predictable. I don't buy the list.
I wouldn't put mich stock in the list, it was rumored on another thread.
I agree. We usually don't good spoilers til about an hour before the show.
Katherine doing Whitney, and Taylor doing Cocker or Ray Charles means everyone is going in for the kill.
Hopefully Elliot does the Righteous Bros. instead of the Hathaway number. It would be a memorable version, and now is not the time to be somewhat obscure in terms of song selection.
Exactly. I'm not sure any time is a good time for obscure. I'd like to see him at least outlast Pickles.
I'm not sure just how accurate that list is though. This is the time to court more fans though and obscure might be a mistake. jmo
Of course, "obscure" and "popular" are two words that can often depend on the listener.
I usually measure "popular" by whether or not I know it, and "obscure" by whether or not I don't.
I checked Itunes for "A Song For You" and there are lots of versions. I think the Simply Red version would be good for Elliot (his voice is similar to Mick Hucknall's).
My order is Taylor, Elliot, Paris, Kelli, then forget about voting. Any of them would be great; it's really a matter about whom benefits the most from winning.
Close your eyes and listen to McPhee...it's painful when she switches octaves and starts howling.
Elliot Y. - "Unchained Melody" Righteous Brothers ** (8 out of 10) "
UNCHAINED MELODY is a Simon favorite, but I think he hates when anyone else tries to sing it. I don't think he has ever given anyone a good review who's tried.
Pickler (or anyone) should be eliminated solely for doing a Celine Dion song.....If they sing the one from Titanic they should not only be automatically eliminated but also shot on sight. "
I was going to say the exact same thing about the Katharine/Houston attempt.
IMO, many of the contestants have chosen songs that I unfamiliar with, and thus don't really enjoy, or they pick the stuff like Houston/Dion and are admonished for it. Is there no middle ground?
Taylor Hicks is my choice regardless. I think most people already have their minds made up.
I have also heard that Chris will sing Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls or Wicked Game by Chris Isaac....who the heck knows....
I think Karen Carpenter did a version of it.
Becky
Chris - Wicked Game
Elliot - A Song For You. Elliot's clue this week is In case you were wondering; Elliott is going to do some Teaching tomorrow night. I hear a brilliant crescendo building, I have no doubts the performance will rattle the hearts of anybody who loves Elliotts music. I feel a record deal being materialized. This show stopper will ignite the phone lines as they have never been before! Over the top baby! Top 5 performance material will be delivered! I hope this answers your question!"
Taylor - I Can't Stop Loving You. A couple places also have Taylor down for "You've lost that loving feeling. The clues they gave out this week were Taylor is Wearing a Velvet Jacket and His song title contains 5 words. Ray Charles always performed in a velvet jacket, which helps point to I Can't Stop loving you.
Wow...the spoiler stuff is interesting.
Here's my 2 cents:
Paris - At Last - if she nails in, she's in another week.
Elliott - If he sings Unchained, and does good, he could be in another week. The other tune, he will probably go home. You've got to pick songs people know.
Kelli - I HATE Celine Deon. Doing Celine could be the "kiss of death" for Kelli. The "Sympathy vote" usually doesn't last 2 weeks in a row.
Taylor - either tune should be great.
Chris - Aerosmith?? I can't see it being a choice. But after being in the bottom last week he should be safe.
Katharine - If McPhee nails it...she pushes ahead. If not, back in the bottom 3. But really, all she needs to do (as posted already) is just stand there and smile pretty for the camera and she'll make the finals.
It gets tough now because I pretty much like everyone who's left. Some better than others...LOL
Any of you folks hear the mp3 of Taylor doing Georgia On My Mind? Unreal........ I hope the world gets to hear him do that song.
Georgia was written about a girl. Not the state.
Right. Just ask Simon.
I don't see a clear winner on this season's Idol. IMHO, they all suck, at least to the extent that no single one of them has the combination of polish and talent required to go large in the marketplace. Some have promise, of course, but there's not a Clarkson-level talent in the crowd.
