Why Saint Patrick's Day?

Saint Patrick's Day has come to be associated with everything Irish: anything green and gold, shamrocks and luck. Most importantly, to those who celebrate its intended meaning, St. Patrick's Day is a traditional day for spiritual renewal and offering prayers for missionaries worldwide.

So, why is it celebrated on March 17th? One theory is that that is the day that St. Patrick died. Since the holiday began in Ireland, it is believed that as the Irish spread out around the world, they took with them their history and celebrations. The biggest observance of all is, of course, in Ireland. With the exception of restaurants and pubs, almost all businesses close on March 17th. Being a religious holiday as well, many Irish attend mass, where March 17th is the traditional day for offering prayers for missionaries worldwide before the serious celebrating begins.

In American cities with a large Irish population, St. Patrick's Day is a very big deal. Big cities and small towns alike celebrate with parades, "wearing of the green," music and songs, Irish food and drink, and activities for kids such as crafts, coloring and games. Some communities even go so far as to dye rivers or streams green!

No, this is my first beer tonight... but since it doesn't taste that good, I drink slowly.

I used to hunt but gave it up years ago due to a bad back.

But I burn up mass quantities of ammo on the range every year. And at special machinegun shoots like on my homepage.

knowing crummy men(women)/kissing frogs....

sigh

goes with territory, unfortunately, huh? no matter what the age, sex, background. The school of hard knocks is much harder than ANY institution of higher learning, IMHO

I could look at it as a good thing though - it helped me to become independent. And I can focus on my career.

Oh.. part of my "cutsie" ping included a note re: you.. was that your hubby who posted yesterday? I think that is too cool, if yes. You can both be our official "chaperones"?

Yes, have seen Monsters Inc twice. But you are right, it is broken down alot.

Favorite ride it Soaring Over California. I do like Space Mountain and California Screaming. Although its funny, I much prefer Disneyland to California Adventure. My son is 4, so mostly we do the kiddie stuff, unless I am with one of my sisters, then we can do the kiddie swap thing and I can go on the other rides too. But Eric is now 42 inches, so he can do some of the bigger rides.

I saw your note on Small World. LOL. My son likes that ride, but its more the song that I am annoyed by. It stays in your mind for days and it does not help that my son sings it just out of the blue.

Yah, that's my hubby (SFC_Chromey). We could be chaperones, sure. He'll only be part-time since Saturday nights are his online gaming night. (We are very nerdy around here.)

I LOVE doing the Jungle Cruise at night. That is so much fun and the boat drivers (or whatever they're called) are much raunchier in their humor at night.

BSc Materials Science Eng - Michigan Tech University 2003
MSc Matls Sci Eng - University of Alberta "Fine NbC ( ~5 nm) Precipitation (strengthening) in Microalloyed Steels" (still in progress).

I had internships with a mini-steel mill, three with a hydraulics company, and my final during my undergrad was with a DSAW line pipe mill.

Pretty familiar with welding, and failure analysis (ultrasonic, X-ray, mag particle, mechanical...). Done internal auditing, supervised a couple large girth-weld inspection projects, some design-oriented things too. Most likely I will go into oil (I would really like to go to Alaska!!)

I was very close to doing my MSc at Georgia Tech on a corrosion project, but I enjoy physical metallurgy. On the other hand, my project has had its ups and downs so I don't know if I made the right choice!

I'll have to start picking your brain for some contacts and info in the pet-chem industry.

But I did see their Bug 3-d movie for the first and last time....Yuck! I hate bugs anyway and the way they made them come out at you and simulated roaches going across the seat, etc. It was too creapy for me. And when the stink bug sprayed the audience, I smelled that smell in my hair for about an hour afterwards. I would not recommend it to anyone.

We're all over the flipping country, and some out of the country.

Actually, there is a big group of us I've noticed is concentrated in a similar area on the East coast. Ohio, Virginia, NC, SC...not real close, but not real far either.
