A few of us were thinking of starting an on-going FReeper diet and fitness thread. It would be a place where we could discuss weight loss, diet, exercise, getting back in shape, encourage each other in our efforts to get healthy, and celebrate our successes.
Any fitness or activity level. 100+ pounds to lose or no weight to lose. Those who have lost weight and kept it off, please share with us what has worked for you. Maybe you love a certain activity, biking, skiing, rock climbing, walking, running, whatever, tell us about how it helps you stay in shape. Share your weight loss success. Just a place to exchange ideas about all things exercise and diet related.
Don't be shy! As Freepers we spend a whole bunch of time in front of our computers and more then a few of us could do with some exercise and probably a little weight loss.
NO VERBAL ATTACKS! NO NAME CALLING! NO BASHING! THE OVERWEIGHT! NO NASTY PICTURES POSTED! This will be a thread about getting healthy and no attacks will be tolerated.
Added!
That sounds fun!
I'm in - Ping me!
Cool haircut and ears.
Gee, am I the only "old-timer" here? I haven't exercized any this winter, but I am just naturally active. Last summer I regularly ran up the 37 steps at the Riverfront Park without getting winded. I run everywhere I go. When I get out of my car I run to the post office or the Wal-Mart, etc. Been hyper all my life. I'm 72.
I'm big on Matt Furey. Found his website on Ann Coulter's site. He charges a lot for his products, but if you are internet savvy you can find his exercises for free.
His bodyweight exercises are extremely challenging and don't take a lot of time or equipment - and extremely effective.
His books are Combat Conditioning and Combat Abs.
Please, add me to the ping list.
I am 55 and have yoyoed on my weight for a number of years. I can concentrate and get it down, but I need some advice on how to keep it there. It gets so easy to say one more beer, another cookie, or a bag of potato chips won't hurt and I end up worse than when I start.
Currently walking 2 to 3 miles at least 5 days a week and trying to cut down the carbs and food intake in general. It just gets harder to lose the older I get.
Kinda. But I didn't have to pay a lot of money for it. I just did it. :)
It's rather silly to eat all your calories in the morning!!!
There's a mindset shift that should also occur: You should retrain your mind to think of being full as painful, and feeling slightly hungry as good. That helps a lot. To achieve that, simply say over and over, when you are full : "Owww! That hurts! I'm full! That's painful!" and then when you are a little hungry, "mmmmm. That feels soooo nice! How wonderful!"
After a while, your brain ends up believing you.
Good grief, can't you get those gall stones out by Laproscopy before they cause you severe pain? I had mine out last fall. Was fine in three days.
But I am -- seriously -- about 4-6 months from being that cut!
Giselle might be an option, if it doesn't jar my spine or bounce me around. I don't have a clue what an AB Lounger is, but I'll look it up. Thanks!
Sign me up for a ping list. So far, I have lost 35 pounds and hope to lose another 30 or so by summer. As you can see by my tagline, I am heavy and into biking.
Put down the Twinkie...
I designed exercises to focus around full-range movement at the head, hands and feet -- in which the movement at those axes to the extremes, produces the greatest muscle contraction possible -- throughout the musculature of the body.
The whole neuromuscular system is designed to produce fine motor control at the hands, feet and head -- where most of the muscles are located, enabling all those movements. The major(larger) muscles mostly serve as support and movement is a secondary function.
For example, in playing basketball, most people are aware of the impressive gross movements but it is the fine movements of the wrists and fingers that determine whether the ball goes in or not. Record home run hitter, Hank Aaron used to say that it was "all in his wrists" -- his ability to turn (rotate)his wrists.
The great performers like dancers, gymnasts, ice skaters, are set apart by the extension (movement) at the hands, head and feet. These athletes are distinguished by extraordinary neck muscle development, along with young looking hands and feet beyond the usual occurrence.
The most shocking thing when visiting people of advanced dementias is that they never move their head at all -- and rather look like living statues. Despite the fact that a lot of people get a lot of movement activities, few people think to focus movement at those most critical areas of the body -- that are the major means of expression of the body and imply functioning in all the rest. If I send a directive to move the hand, it has to go through the rest of the neuromuscular structures to get out there -- obviously.
One of the markers of decreasing strength is the measurement of grip; as people lose foot strength, balance becomes a problem. All the exercise devices ignore these areas of the body because they don't require apparatus to activate. It is just a function of range of movement -- which most people overlook or forget they even have.
You make a fist, and then slowly and deliberately move that fist palmward as far as possible, attempting to increase that range of motion with each subsequent repetition. You'll note that the farther you move into that extreme range of movement, the more it activates the supporting muscles of the body. That contraction is pushing the residual fluids of the tissues (bloat) back to the body, so that there is space for the heart to pump the new fluids into that area, optimizing the circulatory effect.
All these movements can be done without bearing any weight at all because the only measure is the range of movement -- that produces the maximum contraction. When you can effect the fullest range of muscular contraction alternated with the fullest range of relaxation, you have essentially trained your entire voluntary muscular system to aid the heart in optimzing circulation in the body -- which is the healthful effect.
You can check my profile for further writings on the topic.
I went back to work and use Slimfast to replace the meals I miss. I've lost 25 lbs in 9 months and now need to spot tone the belly muscles!
Please add me!
I lost 25 pounds last year without a real program. Need to lose MUCH more!
BTW - I just started The Biggest Loser DVD. For anyone that likes the tapes/DVDs, etc. this one is pretty funny. Has all the contestants and half the time they're out of step, the other half they're bitching to the trainers. Pretty much what I do while I'm doing it.
Posting this on my fridge right now!
Add me to the ping list please.
