RE: Smart-a$$ kids

I got in an argument in second grade because my teacher insisted that there were no such things as negative numbers. I knew better, I had relatives in North St. Paul.

Now, if she had just said, "Yes, but we're only going to use the whole counting numbers for this," well, then I'd have been okay with it. I just assumed that, since we were adding and subtracting integers, that all integers were fair game. Yeesh!

I had trouble again in sixth grade because my teacher tried to tell me that "lesser" wasn't a valid word. HA! Anyone who'd been paying attention to Marlin Perkins would have known about animals like the lesser kudu and such. Furthermore, how else would we discuss "the lesser of two evils"?

Now, she could have said, "'Lesser' is not preferred in common usage," with which I'd have readily agreed, but I'd have still had to hold my ground because I was speaking about animals where the term is unavoidable, when it is used, because it is part of the actual name of the species.

Yeah, that public eddycation system's been loosing nuts and bolts, and burning oil for a long while, now.

I believe the proper usage would be along the lines of, "We hung him out to be hanged."

Hope you've got some beefy clothespins.

Very good point.

Reminds me off the french teacher who told my daughter that "Gendarme" is not a French word.

Obviously, your daughter's teacher was merely a teacher of French, not a French teacher.

Ahhh.

French Canadian, which is a different beast all together!

"Different". Oui. French Canadian is a frog on ice.

My problem, I think in the fifth grade, was a teacher who did not believe it was proper to use consecutive hyphenation, as in pre- and post-election analysis.

I came to the conclusion that I must have been more widely read than my teacher. That didn't surprise me.

Much like the frog in a boiling pot of water, but much colder.
Frigid, actually.

It sure can be frustrating trying to learn from an idiot.

Time to commute. Some outside chance I'll pop in for a bit in a couple of hours, but more than likely I won't be back until tomorrow.

Be good, but if you can't do that, be better.

It's actually very instructive, and liberating.

Once you realize that you are smarter than they are, you understand that you will have to learn on your own, which is what I began to do.

In school, I was too intimidated to think I might be right.

I could entertain the notion of being in error intellectually, but inside, I knew it was just an exercise.

Which is not to say that I was always supremely confident. But I never discarded a concept until I knew it to be false, and it was replaced by something even more unassailable.

I seemed to always have a good grasp of which portions of a particular body of instruction I was missing, and therefore how shaky my footing was. Then I would act to shore up my understanding.

The most reliable compass to understanding is knowing how people react to certain situations. When someone is trying to persuade you that people are reacting in a way that seems totally against their own interests, they are generally leaving out a lot of factors.

Can you give me an example?

"Can you give me an example? "

If you've ever read Walter Williams, you'll note that he personalizes economics by suggesting how he would react in a specific situation.

In other words, his understanding of economics is partially based on realizing how the average person responds in normal and unusual circumstances.
