The most reliable compass to understanding is knowing how people react to certain situations. When someone is trying to persuade you that people are reacting in a way that seems totally against their own interests, they are generally leaving out a lot of factors.

Can you give me an example?

If you've ever read Walter Williams, you'll note that he personalizes economics by suggesting how he would react in a specific situation.

In other words, his understanding of economics is partially based on realizing how the average person responds in normal and unusual circumstances.
