heya...
I can't get the notion outta my head that an updated version (modern avionics, controls, turboprop engines, structural materials) of the Vought XF5U-1 would make a great mid-range high subsonic private aircraft

waddaya think?

Thanks MonkeyFace, I laughed myself silly at that one! Thanks for the late-evening giggle... I'm off to watch "Three Kings" on DVD with the darling boyo.

Cheers, peeps!

Well, the aircraft was quite a performer with the Twin Wasp engines and turbo props would make it lighter and faster. The turboprops could enhance the already excellent STOL capabilities of the Flying Pancake.

The best to both of you! (Did you find a place to live?)

factor in removing the six Browning 50's and their ammunition, then reconfigure the airframe to allow 1pilot+2-4 passengers and their luggage.

I'm serious: I like this plane for this application

Also, you could clear some more room by having a fixed undercarriage as did the prototype (fewer hydraulic lines, etc). Also, enlarging the design by 20% could do the trick.

Well, the retractable undercarriage can be retained. The introduction of turboprops would free some space becuse the original XF5U design had the Twin Wasp engines inboard of the propellor shafts (the propellors were linked to the engines via a gearbox).

and the engines were cross-linked to each other via a transverse geared shaft.

I might want to retain that function. I like redundancy. but I suppose testing could determine whether the beastie can fly and land safely on one engine.

Whaddya mean, "Nobody working today"? That's why I'm not here very much; I'm working.

Actually, I spent an hour, this morning, in the infernal halls of politically-correct sloganeering at the DMV. Ye gods! They've got the rassen-flassen-blassen driver's handbook in eight languages, now!! My tax money at-waste. What a pisser! It has, however, inspired a new addition soon-to-appear on my Profile page. Not letting the cat out of the bag, but I'll ping you when it's posted.

ANYWAY...
I determined NOT to let it get me riled; I laughed and joked with the prisoners behind the counters, and they were all very pleasant. So, on balance, as much as I find the place distasteful, it was a good trip.

Ohno!

I feel sorry that you had to spend time there! Be glad you don't live in Vegas. The last time I was there, it took me almost six hours.

Here, it was only about 40 minutes from the time I got in line to the time I left. Most of the wait was at the door, waiting for them to unlock it.

I'll be looking forward to your "new addition!"
