1010 WINS AUDIO: John Montone reports on fatal fire
The Fire Department was investigating the cause of the blaze, which it considered suspicious. Another fire broke out around the same time in a building not far from the fatal blaze, officials said.
``There have been a series of fires that appear at this time to have some similarity, however, we have not made the connection with that,'' Assistant Fire Chief Howard Hill told reporters at the scene.
At least two people also were injured in the fire in Prospect Heights, which began shortly after 5 a.m., firefighter Brian Conlon said. The extent of their injuries was not immediately known. Fire officials did not immediately identify those who died, except to say they were all female. One of the adult victims died when she jumped from the apartment building to the street, a fire official said.
The fire was brought under control shortly before 7 a.m., Conlon said.
