Officials say the victims, a mother, father and two children, leaped to their deaths from the blazing four-story apartment building at 1033 Pacific Street. The third-alarm fire started in a hallway of the first floor and spread through the entire building just after 5:30 a.m. Heavy flames tore through the four-story building and out the roof.

Meanwhile, another fire burned several blocks away burned through a similar four-story apartment building. Fire shot through the roof of that building. No injuries were immediately reported.

"There have been a series of fires that appear at this time to have some similarity, however, we have not made the connection with that," Assistant Fire Chief Howard Hill said.

Pacific Street was closed to traffic between Classon and Franklin avenues, and Classon Avenue was closed between Dean Street and Atlantic Avenue.
