Saw "The Wild Geese" Again After 20 Years. *Pure Vanity Post*

Posted on 02/16/2006 12:04:42 PM PST by speed_addiction

I got this movie as a gift for my father. It is one of his favorite movies and definitely one of mine, also.

TOPICS: TV/Movies
KEYWORDS: africa; warmovies; wildgeese
The movie has everything for the military enthisiast. FAL assualt rifles, a screaming, firebreathing Royal Sergeant Major, a HALO jump, a commando assault on an African Army Garrison and airfield, a heroic last stand.

Roger Moore, Richard Harris and the Great Richard Burton as aging Mercenary Officers who lead a company of crack mercs on a rescue mission and blow up half of Africa.

It is on my list of the best 5 war movies ever made. I recommend this movie highly to anyone who has never seen it. Those who have seen it, I know would not mind seeing it again.

I always liked the way guys flew through the air when they got blown up by grenades in this one.

Yes, Hardy Krueger. His character had fought his whole life for his country but had reservations about killing for money.

The movie is almost 30 years old. In fact the DVD I bought my dad is the "30th Anniversary Edition."

The movie has aged very well. It was somewhat ahead of it's time. It deals with racism in an honest way. Another thing that made it be ahead of it's time was the unit corpsman. The character is openly gay but is every bit the killer and soldier his fellow mercenaries are. His gallant last stand fighting machete wielding African soldiers armed only with a Kabar and taking several with him is one of the high points of the film. "My, look at the size of you Bastards! Too bad we can't be friends!" Are his last words as he charges with his knife.

GREAT film! I had no idea that it was out on DVD.

I still would like to see a balanced movie about U.S. mercenaries in Rhodesia during the Bush wars.
