And now, I bring you tonight’s Dinklemeyer. It is with great pleasure that I introduce the first major character besides Freddy to last throughout the strip’s history:

I never gave the talking pig a name; he is just called The Pig. In expanding Dinklemeyer’s world, I wanted to draw a lot more of Freddy’s home life and get him away from High School.

If I’m allowed to say it, the pig is one of my all-time favorite cartoon characters that I personally have created.

I had long wanted to do an animal character. At first, I thought, “dog.” But a talking dog…that just doesn’t sound original. Same with a cat. Feels like it’s been done. So I was going through domestic animals in my mind, when I came to pigs. Pigs are not as well represented in the comic strip world as dogs and cats, so it seemed like a perfect fit.

Here, his look is not quite fully developed. But his first line of dialogue here establishes his personality perfectly. I had no idea how funny the pig would turn out to be when I first started him.

Freddy Dinklemeyer has a weird home life.

There will be a lot more talking pig in the future, I promise.

In fact, the pig is the first secondary character that really will last throughout the strip. I had tried to create other characters, but none of them worked out.

Hey, there are two sharks tonight. Double your pleasure, double your fun!

Unless the original shark is the only one that will do it for you.

The more the merrier, especially a shark in lederhosen. That's great!

Everybody loooooves that shark...so I make sure to give him plenty of appearances. He's getting easier and easier to draw, too.

Great toon, pcottraux! You've got the smugness of the Rats down well.

Thank you.

The Donkey is a very smug character. I've tried to make him into what you'd call a "character we love to hate."

I tried my best to figure out what a Danish shark would look like. I did a lot of internet research trying to find some traditional Danish clothing/styles, etc. I couldn't find a thing. So I just kind of winged it.

The results were surprisingly satisfying.
