Seattle coach laments having to ‘take on the guys in the striped shirts, too

DETROIT - No appreciation or consolation in Seattle for the Seahawks, at least not yet.

Nope, they were still stuck in frustration.

The post-Super Bowl parties went into early Monday morning as the Seahawks at least tried to celebrate their season, instead of their somber Sunday. Later, coach Mike Holmgren tried to refocus the team, momentarily, on what it had done and what it still may do.

And the Seahawks were still stinging from a few officials’ calls that went against them, such as Darrell Jackson’s touchdown catch that was taken away by a penalty and a disputed TD run by Pittsburgh’s Ben Roethlisberger.

“We knew it was going to be tough going up against the Pittsburgh Steelers,” Holmgren told the fans at Qwest Field. “I didn’t know we were going to have to play the guys in the striped shirts as well.”

I don't really remember - I think the one against Hasselback late and the first Steeler TD. I am not sure if they are ex pro players. They were more upset about Joe Montana and his perceived greed than they were about the SB officiating.

Your assessments, as usual are right on. But just one question .......... you say on Stevens' catch (denied), "but Holmgren failed to challenge the ruling on the field". Is he permitted to challenge a whistled call like that?

Didn't you hear? The refs tied Alexander's shoelaces together when no one was looking. It is their fault he didn't do squat. And the refs tipped all the balls going to Stevens. The refs didn't call the obvious clip on Big Ben just so they could have a fig leaf that they could hide behind.

Neither team played well, but the zebras were worse. MUCH worse.

The game was not a work of art, I agree. But you are wrong to say that both teams did not play well.

Sometimes teams' personalities and game plans create a game like that.

If you were a professional player or inside the game in any way you would know that the majority of effort and play during that game was fine.

Now, those Steeler-Cowboy SBs were GREAT games. Last night looked like a preseason game in comparison to those.

You can get a call changed from incomplete to complete, but any further action wouldn't be allowed (if the receiver had subsequently gained yardage, for example, the spot would still be at the point of reception, assuming the whistle blew).

The Steelers showed flashes of brilliance, but the majority of the game on their part was mediocre. They couldn't move the ball much at all in the first half. In the second half, they had a couple of big-hitter plays, but showed no consistency.

The Seahawks showed flashes, too, but couldn't seem to finish their drives.

The referees changed the complexion of the game with missed and made calls. If you choose to ignore that fact, well, it's not my problem.

It's this type of situation that argues for abandoning replay and just letting the refs call the game. The ref clearly blew the call, but he also blew his whistle. There's no way to make it right.
