(WooHoo! TOP 250!) Free Republic Folders Search for a Cure for Cancer, Alzheimer's

OK, new thread for the next week, now that Pittsburgh has another Super Bowl ring.

First, a big shout out to the SETI and BOINC members who have added CPUs to the effort. Remember, its Team 36120, NOT Team 0.

Next, congrats to all for bumping our team up to 714 processors and 271 user names. We have a number of new users in the team, with over a 50 computers now from GetLoaded.com, a trucking support website, all contributing while their owners ply our freeways keeping the nation moving.

We now have 22 members who have contributed at least 10,000 points each. Greenbo, stylin19a, and smith288 are the latest to reach this milestone. Chesterbelloc and mediamole will join them this next week. Great job! Even dfwddr will make this mark one day ;`)

Even more impressive, our team now boasts 180 members who have folded at least 1,000 points. That is more than the entire number of folders for our erstwhile left-wing environazi competitors!

Free Republic Folding@Home Stats Page

On the global front, Free Republic Folders is now listed at # 268. We will be in the Top 250 on Wednesday!

As we continue to grow there are a number of milestones coming around the bend:

Top 250 by February 10
Top 200 by the end of the February

We have 1,350,000 points so far and have folded over 10,000 WU. We will soon reach an exalted mark of folding a million points per month, each and every month! Fantastic!

Thanks again to all that are helping us advance science and promote the peaceful use of computers.

I went searching for new stats and am amazed at the growth of the Free Republic Folders.

On our Christmas thread we met Mr. Klutz as he added his first systems, and with 11 systems folding was hoping to one day overtake Malsua. We had just broken Top 1200 and had finally gotten our 100th CPU. The DUmmies and the Kossacks started teams and were boasting about chasing us down.

If you remember all of these threads thank you very much for participating. If you have no idea what I am talking about PLEASE ask. This really is about aiding research to cure cancer, Alzheimer's and Lyme's Disease.

Please ping to join or drop our Folding ping list.

I have a laptop I was thinking about switching to Linux (well, it already has it installed, actually) for folding.. Does Linux show any performance improvement?

I can't get that software to work on my computer. I'll join your group eventually if they come out with a new version that works for me.

I set up FrogDad's computer yesterday and it's folding its little heart out, along with mine.

Can't wait for it to finish its first WU. It was assigned one of those 12,500 frame jobs for its first assignment.

Woohoo!

It "could" give a performance boost, depending on CPU, memory, and video hardware. I've found that all in all, the most bang for the buck on the perform-o-meter (so to speak!) is realized with FreeBSD. But FreeBSD isn't quite "prime time" for desktop usage yet.

We use RedHat Linux ES-4 at work, but I run Debian Sarge (stable) on a laptop and a buddy of mine there runs RedHat Fedora Core 4. I think both are probably a good choice, although I really, REALLY like the "apt" applications for aptitude (for installtion, and updates).

So far I've installed Debian on half a dozen or so machines and with well over half of them, it auto discovered the video hardware and I didn't even have to build a custom XF86Config file! I've been impressed so far.

You'll most likely realize a performance increase with Linux on slightly older PC hardware, but even if it's no better "speedwise", it will be extremely stable!

Your question makes me wonder though if the MS-Win folding client runs any better than the Linux client. I don't have a Windows box to compare it to so I don't know. If you can find somebody running Windows on an AMD Athlon 2200+ with 1G of RAM, I'd be happy to turn over my stats so you can compare. :-)
