TUCSON, Ariz. - The world's first face transplant recipient is using her new lips to take up smoking again, which doctors fear could interfere with her healing and raise the risk of tissue rejection.

"It is a problem," Dr. Jean-Michel Dubernard, who led the team that performed the pioneering transplant in France on Nov. 27, acknowledged on Wednesday.

LOL - how French. And she's probably smoking Gaulloise, which means she'll need a vocal cord transplant soon, too.

To me, this story didn't sound as if it was going to end well from the very beginning, and this sort of willful, self-destructive behavior so soon afterwards doesn't alter my opinion at all.

What I don't understand is why the surgeons would select someone who has a smoking habit, something they knew would interfere with the healing process.

It's her choice. I think it is ludicrous but...it's her choice.

Yes, it's her choice, but I'm wondering why the doctors seem shocked! Did they not ask her a few questions before the operation? Or are they just putting this out there as a CYA in case her transplant fails?

Since it's not really her face, the anti-smokers will add her to their second hand smoke victim statistics if she dies.

It's not a habit, it's an addiction, which makes the decision to transplant even worse.

Get this chick some patches and gum!!!!

"Did they not ask her a few questions before the operation?"

Apparently not. They seemed pretty flabbergasted about the uproar over the donor tissue coming from a suicide, as well as the rumor of attempted suicide by their own patient.

It could be worse, she could be smoking Gitanes.

And the French want to tell us how to live and act.

I hope she has a big plate of 60% butterfat cheese to go along with her ciggie.

Of course a big glass of decent red wine with that will cut through all the fat and nicotine and just flush it right out of her little body.

It's all very French. This woman is a failed suicide because her Labrador scratched her face until she woke up after too much wine and sedatives. The woman whose face she received is a failed suicide who hanged herself and was on life support long enough to harvest tissue from the nose down.

The real victim is the pooch who was only trying to save her life and was put down.

Think on this a bit...

Who knows? Was this face transplant due to disfigurement or just a vanity make over? Extreme but ....
