Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
And there are many paths to tread
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
|
|
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
|
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

Heh. I can get my own kudzu.
Thinking about getting a planter and trellis deal set up in TheSunroom this summer. Something that will shade/screen that room in the summer.

The only trouble with the tires is that some of them still have rims in 'em.
That and that the landlord said something about planting stuff in them himself...I don't know if he quite gets it yet that I really *want* to do gardening and all myself.

Say, you cookin' folk, you ...
I was in H.E.B. (regional grocery store chain) today, and I bought a cucumber. The sign above the cucumber bin suggested sauteéing cucumber slices in butter and seasoning with dill.
I never considered frying cucumbers ... I've always sliced them, layered them in a bowl with raw onion slices, and poured white vinegar over 'em. Salt, pepper, Italian seasonings, cover and refrigerate several hours, then gobble 'em down.
What do you do with cucumbers ... besides yogurt and mint?
To: Rose in RoseBear
I've had 'em served on sandwiches at parties (usually by people who think that's oh-so-refined. Personally I prefer chicken salad)

I'll sometimes use 'em like chips - with salsa or dip of some kind. Or yogurt, or with vinegar like you mentioned. Grandma used to make "fresh pickles" with cider vinegar, onions, sugar and the cukes.
And I like 'em in tabouli, but that's another thing altogether. Also like them as a sandwich with cream cheese - best if you salt 'em first so they aren't so drippy.
I've never had them cooked, I don't think. That seems odd...but it could be good!
To: Rose in RoseBear
I've only ever eaten them raw with a touch of salt or in a salad.
I've never heard of a recipe calling for frying cucumbers either. :-/

After I let mine sit several hours in vinegar, I use the cucumbers and the onion slices on sandwiches, the way other people use pickles.
Especially good on bulk or Polish sausage sandwiches. Yum!

Yeah, that sounds good. Now a sandwich with nothin' but cukes, that's sort of skimpy.

Hmmm...I do pretty much the same. I usually mix sliced cucumbers, fresh tomatoes, and onions, maybe some parsley and toss it with oil and vinegar dressing.
They go on salads. We also used to soak cucumber slices in a 50:50 vinegar:water solution with a dash of salt, some sugar and pepper. 'Course you could make cucumber sticks and eat 'em with dip.....or make pickles.

Yeah, but a cucumber sandwich is vey chi-chi ... eaten by the ladies who lunch.
Hmmm ... I think Guido's Tearoom, Pasta House, and Social Emporium needs to have a robusto cucumber sandwich on the menu --- a fresh-baked hoagy roll, maybe, with mayo and mustard and tomatoes and dill and cilantro and onion.
Nice veggie food. When I get my own house, I'm planting those veggies!

I love them in tabouli too, but more often than not, I make tzadtziki with em if I don't just make a cucumber-tomato salad. I guess you could cook them. I just never thought about it since I always eat them cold or pickled.
To: RMDupree
Hmm... unpickled pickles.
Evenin' folkses...
