This is going to be less than pretty, but someone had to do it.
Yesterday's Steeler/Indy game was .............. well, you fill that in.
I'm a Steeler fan of 55 years or so, and the game yesterday was, to say the least, quite bizarre --- as the concept of "a football move" brought back visions of Elroy 'Crazy Legs' Hirsh. The LIVE THREAD yesterday including this incredible game was as lively as the game itself. This morning I gathered some of your comments on the Troy Polamalu interception.
Let's be honest............. he caught the damn ball and the refs blew the call. But FReepers' humor and insights were pretty darn funny as all this was happening. I'm a crappy typist, so this may be a quite ugly presentation. I am just going to present some of the posts from all of you who were transfixed by yesterday's game and the bizarre officiating. It all was unreal, and your comments were fabulous.
Yoi!

After further review, and a review of security provisions, we reverse the call.

CBS considers the money slipped to the refs to make that reversal the best investment it could make. 715 posted on 01/15/2006 3:56:15 PM EST by steveegg

I'm a Colts fan, and that INT call was horrible. Seemed like TV wanted an interesting finish.

Indeed - I said the same thing at the time. They only needed two yards for the first down. They could have picked it up on a short pass and then extended the drive. They still had plenty of time.
Iron City will do that to you! Get ready for next Sunday!
Speaking of quotes, am I the only one that remembers the on-field explanation of the reversal including that the ball was loose before Polamalu's knee knocked it out? Could someone that TiVo'ed the game double-check that?
bump
They were empty.............. I rented them yesterday.
Of course the real punchline if you see the low angle endzone replay of the Norwood miss is that the hold sucked, the holder didn't spin the ball properly (thread to the front) so the ball didn't fly properly and it still just barely missed. It's kind of sad we always blame the kicker because sometimes it's the holder that blows it (not yesterday though, the hold was find Mike's foot was at the wrong angle).
As opposed to fixing games for the networks, specifically NBC (widely believed to have turned the NBA into a fix-them-all league when they held the broadcast rights)?
We aren't seeing a lot of bad officiating because the NFL uses part-time officials. We're seeing bad officiating for two simple reasons: 1) the NFL game gets faster all the time, and therefore increasingly more difficult to officiate; and 2) the instant replay rule actually encourages poor -- or at least indecisive -- officiating by giving officials an "out" that would correct most of their mistakes.
Say what you will about the Bus, but no one will ever call him skinny!
Can I have the next dance?
I stopped worrying about whose butt the press kisses a long time ago. Once I figured out that what they really care about the most is how good the guy is in interviews I stopped letting them tell me who's a good player.
Congratulations on the win and good luck next week in Denver. I'll be rooting for the Steelers!
That was great!
There is an X-files episode, the one where it goes into the life and times of the Cigarette Smoking Man (CSM). In one scene, he and two other people are sitting around a table, and they are making decisions about all kinds of improbable world situations and events.
One of them, at the end of the meeting, brought up, "What about the Super Bowl?", to which the CSM replied, "As long as I have anything to do with it, Buffalo will never win the Super Bowl."
Everytime I see a major sporting event obviously tampered with by 'bad' officiating, I recall that scene.
It was meant to be funny, but ended up being eerie.
Either way it was a pathetic non-call.
The Burgh has a lot of fans all over the country, if they make the distance the SB will have fine ratings.
And how the wonderful class of Big Ben not assigning any blame nor taking any credit for the fumble and tackle. Solid organization with solid players.
Yea, like 'Little-Ben' is going to "Blame" A team-mate. And yes, that was a 'class' move by the HEAD COACH to do a muscle man pose to the Indy crowd. Can you see Belichek or Holmgren doing that? Never. And I love his play calling, up by 11, late in the 4th and he GOES for it @ midfield. Either way, you punt that ball. Sometimes fools look smart. And as far as ratings go, read the news about network execs. freaking out about the possibility of having to lower advertising rates because of the low ratings expected. I've been a Patriots fan for 30 plus years and held Redskin season tickets back in the 80's, so I'm a big fan. But I'm not making any SB party plans for the teams left, and that is the sentiment across the Country.
And let's not forget cause #3- there are some NFL rules that are just plain poorly written. Chief among them being the pass interference rule (which all but specifically requires refs to look into a parallel dimension to determine if the pass would have been catchable without the possible interference), and everything that includes the words "football move". And let's not forget the mighty tuck rule which is still on the books.
LOL............. that'll burn some clock!
Great post, imo.
The Steelers deserved to win that game and the ref should be retired for being so transparently empathetic to the Colts at home.
Homer Simpson wouldn't have made that call. Doh!
