Poodle Is Manhattan's Most Popular Dog Breed

The poodle pranced to the top of the list of Manhattan's most popular dog breeds in 2005.

The poodle edged out the Labrador retriever and dachshund, the American Kennel Club said Tuesday.

Manhattan's standard, miniature and toy poodles snatched No. 1 from the borough's dachshunds, which slid to third from 2004's top spot. The Labrador retriever was ranked No. 2, according to the kennel club, which based the rankings on its national registration statistics broken down by ZIP code.

Next in popularity were the Yorkshire terrier, golden retriever, bulldog, French bulldog, Shih Tzu and Havanese. The 10th spot was shared by the Maltese and the pug.

New to the list for 2005 were the French bulldog and the Havanese, the kennel club said.

"These breeds appeal to sophisticated people who, while they may not have a lot of space in their Manhattan apartment, have plenty of love for a petite canine companion," kennel club spokeswoman Gail Miller said in a news release announcing the rankings.

The American Kennel Club, which was established in 1884, says it aims to advance the study, breeding and exhibition of purebred dogs.

If it's not a Basenji, it's just a dog.

The point is, few people in Manhattan have room for a large breed. And it is supremely unfair to the dog.

Depends on the breed and the dog... I know little dogs that are a lot more active and need a lot more exercise than some of the really large breeds, particularly after middle age.

I wouldn't own a dog in the city because of the walking issue. I don't walk behind my dogs with a baggie, they go out in the yard whenever they want :~D

The poodle is a classic blue state "dog."

Here is a red state dog. We eat poodles.

Bred to hunt lions or tigers if I'm not mistaken. Anyway... poodle = football is in reference to the little yippy yappy ones. The big ones are actually pretty scary when they get pissed because they can be just as vicious as the little ones... only bigger and heavier. I agree with you 100%.

Growing up with Standard Poodles most of my young life, I was led to believe that Poodles are originally of Chinese decent. Anyone?

Most Poodles I know, are smarter than the average stripper.

Get a Labradoodle and you can have the #1 and #2 dogs rolled up into one.

No? Really? The poodle is the most popular dog in the land of fruitcakes and frustrated feminists? Who would have guessed?

Fair enough, but I used to know a couple of freaks who kept a great dane in a 12x15 studio along with themselves.

And when the aliens do come, should they land on Manhattan, they are going to naturally assume that this planet is ruled by furry four-legged overlords, followed around by groveling two-legged slaves for that very reason.

I don't know about hunting, but my YorkiePoodle can catch squirrels. There are a lot of half tail tree rats running around the neighborhood. He's a bullet! But he wouldn't last long in the woods.

Okay, I was wrong. The poodle started out in Germany as a duck hunter.

Well, Danes are one of the breeds that actually doesn't need a lot of exercise. In fact, they have a lot of issues if they ~do~ exercise too much. They not only have skeletal issues, they often have heart problems. They were bred too big too fast, and their heart didn't keep up. They have short expected life spans because of it, sometimes as short as 4-5 years.

So... The dog may have been happy as a clam. Bird dogs, or border collies, I don't think you'd have as much success with in the city.

Border collie is my favorite breed, but I wouldn't get one unless I lived on a farm or something.

Yep, tied them to a stake as bait. Kind of like staking a goat to bring in a mountain lion.

They're really intense. I had one for a few days that I rescued from a roadside. Eventually found the anxious owner. But that dog never relaxed. He followed me constantly and was always staring intently like he didn't even need to blink. He circled me while I mowed the lawn!

Very intense. They need a job.
