Texas QB Vince Young to enter NFL draft
Houston Chronicle ^ | 1/8/06 | JOSEPH DUARTE

Posted on 01/08/2006 8:53:19 AM PST by jimbo123

Texas junior quarterback Vince Young plans to enter the NFL draft and forgo his final year of college, a close family friend said today. Young plans to make the announcement this afternoon at a press conference in Austin.

"He has the blessing of God, the pastor and his family," said Yolanda Lezine, Young's godmother and the family media's spokeswoman. "It's his decision. Everybody is going to support him a 110 percent."

Young capped off his career Wednesday night, rallying the Longhorns from a 12-point deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat two-time defending national champion Southern California, 41-38, in the Rose Bowl.

The Madison product will hire Bus Cook as his agent. Cook is also the agent for Tennessee quarterback Steve McNair, Young's mentor, and Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre.

I think Leinart could be as good as his predecessor Carson Palmer and Palmer is pretty good.

Young has a cannon but the release is slow which is why Ryan Leaf got intercepted all day long.

ML has top flight QB talent like Peyton Manning. What he doesn't make upfront he'll make up later like Manning.

There is no guarantee of "making it up later" - in fact, it is borders more toward improbable. How many highly drafted QBs ever sign huge extensions? So most certainly do, but just as many are out of the league or reduced to journeymen.

A lot of it comes down to luck too. If Tom Brady had been drafted by the Saints or Lions, would he have had the same success?

The player can't control a lot of luck factors, but he can control when he enters the draft.

By staying in school an extra year when the player would already be a very high pick is not a wise career decision. Sometimes, like Peyton Manning, it works out ok - in other cases, like Kelly Washington, it can be a disaster. The chances of injury in football are just too high.

In basketball it may make sense to stay at Duke another year and develop your game, but in football the career is short and a player is better off learning from the pros.

Nevermind my post #37, somehow I was searching under keyword instead of title. Sorry for the mistake and bother.

I became a Young fan after watching him single handedly beat my Wolverines last year. To watch him do it again, on the biggest college stage was very, very impressive. Reggie Bush wasn't even the best player on the USC roster...I don't see how he goes ahead of Vince in the draft.

FYI, search function isn't working. I searched "young" before posting, nothing came up. Even now this thread still doesn't come up.

It did for me. That's how I found this thread. Did you try with a Capital "Y"?

For some reason I did a keyword search a while back, and forgot to reset it to a title default. My bad.

Is Sanchez projected to be the starting QB next year? I don't know so I'm just asking.

Also, what are your thoughts on Leinart staying in college last year?

The coaches are calling the Booty/Sanchez race to be the starting QB pretty much a tossup, with the edge going to Booty because he's spent the last 3 years learning the USC offensive system, and Sanchez only has had one year... and mostly as the Scout QB (so he hasn't been using the USC offensive system in practice). This situation will come down to spring practice, summer workouts and then pre-season practice - just like it was when Leinart and Matt Cassell were fighting for the position after Carson Palmer left.

Matt's decision to stay was probably a good one on a personal basis - but not on a financial basis... but he'll still make 8 figures over his NFL career. Does it really make a difference if he makes $90million vs. $80million over his career...when we're talking that much money, my eyes glaze over.

BUT, this means that MY BUCKEYES will be #1 next year starting out. Woohooo!!!

Yes, but who's #1 right NOW??? ;-)

I'm back in downtown Hell, by the way. But I got to see the Rose Bowl on my last night home. What a way to go!

OSU will never be voted #1. They will have to earn it on the field because the voters hate "tressel ball" even though it is winning ball.

You know tressel ball, you win the field position game, have a great punter and field goal kicker, allow no big plays by the other guys' offense, make no turnovers on your offense and you win the game by 10 points or less, all the time.

Voters hate that. They want you to win 50-10 before you get their vote. Last year's OSU team was underrated all year because voters like offense, not the great defense and special teams that are the hallmark of tressel ball.

How valuable is this in the NFL? Ask Houston's Carr and Atlanta's Vick, both of whom are sitting home during the playoffs.

To be fair, McNabb had 4 straight NFC championship games and 1 superbowl appearance. Vick also has a NFC championship game with a franchise that has been the epitome of losing. Culpepper and McNair have also had a good deal of success.

A lot of QBs that don't run end up on injured reserve as well. While they don't take as many hits, pure drop back passers are usually less densely built than running QBs and are more easily hurt by a hard hit.

Don't take the above to be my endorsement of running QBs. I think that a QB should be a passer first and being able to run to pick up a first down should be an added bonus. Quarterbacks that were good passer along with above average mobility like Montana, Young, Bradshaw, Staubauch and Elway seem to be the ideal mixture.

I have to disagree with that. Ohio State has always been closer to a media darling than a media dog.

Ohio State has consistently been the highest ranked team with one or two losses the last few years.

Ohio State earns it on the field so being ranked #1 shouldn't be a problem anyway.

I read the article. I didn't think it was possible that there was a sports writer worse than Randy Galloway, but sonofagun, apparently one exists.

There's a huge amount of pressure with big time draft picks. A lot of people forget that the Cowboys got Emitt Smith with the tenth pick. They wouldn't have taken him, except that the "can't miss" running back of the draft, Blair Thomas, was taken by the Jets with the #2 pick.

None of it makes any difference without an offensive line, though. The saddest thing about Barry Sanders career was that some of his most spectacular moves were made six yards deep in his own backfield, trying to avoid a loss.

many are out of the league or reduced to journeymen.

Tim Couch, Health Schuler, Art Schleister, Ryan Leaf, Aikili Smith, et.

Tim Couch probably set the Browns back 6-7 years alone.

With 1 loss to TX, Ohio was consistently ranked below 4-5 1 loss teams.

During their 14-0 season, they were always at the bottom of the undefeateds.

OSU had an unbelievably good defense coming back and they were ranked 14 preseason this year even though everyone in Ohio was talking national championship because we knew how good the defense was.

You haven't watched the Buckeyes the past couple months have you? They rolled up 617 yards on ND and they DON'T play Tressel-ball anymore. Beyond that, there isn't anyone returning anything stronger (this is all perception, which makes up the 1st polls of the year) on offense than the Buckeyes, except ND, but since OSU beat the crap out of ND, they won't be above OSU.
