Texas QB Vince Young to enter NFL draft
Houston Chronicle ^ | 1/8/06 | JOSEPH DUARTE

Texas junior quarterback Vince Young plans to enter the NFL draft and forgo his final year of college, a close family friend said today. Young plans to make the announcement this afternoon at a press conference in Austin.

"He has the blessing of God, the pastor and his family," said Yolanda Lezine, Young's godmother and the family media's spokeswoman. "It's his decision. Everybody is going to support him a 110 percent."

Young capped off his career Wednesday night, rallying the Longhorns from a 12-point deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat two-time defending national champion Southern California, 41-38, in the Rose Bowl.

The Madison product will hire Bus Cook as his agent. Cook is also the agent for Tennessee quarterback Steve McNair, Young's mentor, and Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre.

Domanick Davis is a good running back. What Houston needs to do is offer David Carr for a trade for draft picks, take Young as the first pick. With the picks they can draft what they really need, offensive linemen.

Reggie Bush may be a great running back, but the average career of an NFL running back is only a few years, and they are much more prone to injury. Do you want to bet the franchise on this guy, rather than a quarterback?

well he has to cash in when he's hot.

Lienart made the same mistake last year.

I don't know how good he will be as a QB in the NFL. The NFL coaches will mess with his mechanics, something that didn't work while he was a Texas.

BUT, this means that MY BUCKEYES will be #1 next year starting out. Woohooo!!!

ML has top flight QB talent like Peyton Manning. What he doesn't make upfront he'll make up later like Manning. Alex Smith from Utah got a great contract from the 49ers but I think He like Heath Shuler will be out of the NFL in three years.

It makes perfect sense for VY to enter the draft now. His signing bonus alone will be worth more than what average college grads can expect to make in a lifetime.

I know it is impossible, but how can the Browns move up from the twelfth spot to draft VY? If not him, what about A.J. Hawk?

This is a ch__ch. What's missing?

This probably means the Houston Texans have a used Carr for sale and will draft Vince Young in the first round.

Best line so far........ ;^)

I kinda doubt they are going to go after VY. If Frye had played badly in his last couple games, they might have, but I don't think they will now.

AJ Hawk is another matter.

They need some bodies on that defense and Hawk is the perfect OLB for a 3-4 defense.

Not an expert but I got the impression from the Rose Bowl game that Young is a great running QB but only average as a passer.

How valuable is this in the NFL? Ask Houston's Carr and Atlanta's Vick, both of whom are sitting home during the playoffs.

That all changed with the Rose Bowl. Now they want the hometown boy. Texas beats USC again.

I see your point and the thought even crossed my mind after the game.

I still think they're going to pick Reggie.

I might be wrong. I am once or twice a year. ;-)

And it means my Huskers have a prayer against them. Wow USC is losing Leinart, Bush and maybe white and we play them and Texas is losing Young. We may have a chance at making a run next year.

I think a team looking for a pure RB is waisting there pick on Bush, however White is the sweet choice, power and size go a long ways in the NFL. A team looking too have an all purpose back couldnt go rong with Bush. People keep saying that hes a Gale Sayers, he is more of a Thurman Thomas in his all around abilities.

Personally I don't think Reggie Bush is going to be a huge star in the NFL.

The boy is wicked fast, and he may turn out to be another Warrick Dunn, but he does not have the size or ability to run between the tackles like an NFL back is required to do.

I see Bush being a Special Teams, 3rd Down type back.

The SC back that will be special in the NFL will be LenDale White. He has all the tools for success in the NFL.

Lienart was as much a product of USC system and talent as he was talented himself. I don't know that he is the complete head case Leaf was, although his comments after the Rose Bowl show that he is every bit the Prima Donna Leaf thought he was. I look at Lienarts career to be more on the lines of Danny Wuerfful, Gino Toretta, etc etc etc.

He may surprise me and develop like Rex Grossman has, but he hits me as the former Hiesman winner backup QB that so many others have become.

Vince Young has the size to be a successful QB. he has the potential to be more Michael Vick than Vick is. It will all come down to whether he can harness that cannon he has. he reads defenses and runs a game much better than Vick ever has, so I think he definately has the potential to be every bit the star Michael is. houston would be fools not to pick him, especially with his hometown draw ability in Texas.

FYI, search function isn't working. I searched "young" before posting, nothing came up. Even now this thread still doesn't come up.

Either leinart or young could be a bust. The NFL is very tough on college qbs.

Young running over college players aint going to happen in the NFL. Plus Young has a great arm but a slow release.

Where are the running QBs now ? All on injured reserve. McNabb (ran over college defenses on a regular basis), Michael Vick, Culpepper.

McCoy is actually the backup's backup but the backup is a senior and McCoy is a redshirt freshman. Time will tell if he is the next savior at QB but fiction writers everywhere must salivate at the idea of a QB for the University of Texas with a made-to-order name like that.

Besides, we're all out of superlatives and cliches for Vince.
