"A 15-year-old boy, in the hand with a shotgun he was building based on instructions he had downloaded from the Internet"

Kids aren't as mature as they used to be. Well, at least most kids aren't.

15 years old is a little young to be handling a gun (not to mention assembling a gun) unsupervised. Where were his parents? They should have been watching him.

This isnt to say I believe that kids shouldn't be exposed to guns, by their parents. Early training with firearms, and learning the 4 rules, builds a child's character and responsibility. But the parents should excersize good judgement, and supervise their children.

In this case, the parents should have been watching the kid.

Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction

Always keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot

Always keep the gun unloaded until ready to use

Huh? A self-defense gun needs to be ready to use at all times. The mugger or rapist or home invader won't wait for you to load up.

The correct rule is "Always treat a gun AS IF it was loaded".

And Rule #4, too often forgotten, is "Be sure of your backstop". By all means, blow away the intruder who's heading for your kid's bedroom, but be sure you don't take your kid out with the same shot, as it goes through the flimsy modern sheetrock wall and into the kid on the other side.

I was allowed to squirrel hunt unsupervised at the age of 12. Never a gun accident.

depends on how you were raised. properly instructed, 12 is fine. improperly or not instructed, 15 is too young.
