It's fish soaked and preserved in lye, then drained and cooked. My husband's family used to make it for Christmas Eve. It's foul-tasting, but can be made (barely) edible with a LOT of melted butter and some salt. Think fishy, squeaky jello with awful chunks in it (my experience). Pass the lutefisk and go to the lefse instead.

The sauce makes the difference.
Chas once tried explaining to me the reasons why, but lost me within 5 minutes.

Thought for ten minutes about an comment to this. Couldn't come up with one so I'm letting it lay out there.

You should change your tagline to "On my signal, Unleash lutefisk".

I've had lutefisk. I've had haggis. I have also had drilling mud splashed in my mouth. Of the three, the drilling mud was the least nasty.

Maybe not right away. Maybe decades from now.
But you will definitely die.

I've never tried that, but it sounds delicious! I've been more of a "slather butter and sugar on it" kind of person, but your idea has definite merit.

Even stupid-er than knitting a sushi roll? Because I did that last night, and it was pretty stupid. ;-P

Cute, Martin. "Better lutfisk through chemistry."
Now M & M, I'm pretty sure you guys realize, but maybe others don't, that I did not write that Chemistry text. That was done by one of the three or four other guys by the name of "Charles Henrickson" I am aware of. That one is a chemistry prof in Kentucky.
To: LongElegantLegs
Ok, I'll bite. How do you knitt on a sushi roll?

The Norwegians up here eat it every year at the big Lutheran Church feed down the hill from my house, and those who love it love it. Me, well, I opt for the meatballs.

Just follow the pattern. I learned how to make real Sushi also, and thought I better mark the occasion in yarn.
