New thread for this week.
Congrats to all new members who joined this week!
We've made excellent progress so far and have smoked the DUmmies and Kossacks. Let's keep folding!
I see it as a complete waste of time and money. The last thing I want to do is donate free CPU cycles to some liberal scumbag college that is also a waste of time and money. You would think by now with the "massive computing power" they have at their disposal, they would have found what they're looking for.
Well. Everyone knows my opinion on the matter, and that is, Folding@home is a worthy cause, and well worth continuing, and I'm willing to abide by the wishes of the other members of team 36120.
I'm leaving my CPU's to work, and won't remove them, in the hopes that we'll rename the team, and continue on in our endeavours, either here, or wherever we can agree to assemble.
As of now, I'm returning to my "lurker" status, and will continue to answer freepmail, but I can also be reached at TLbradley@gmail.com
I'm deeply disappointed in what transpired here tonight. Not by the members of team 36120, but by the the intervention of others.
g'night.
With the tuitions they charge? Absolutely.
Please take me off your ping list. Thanks.
This is a disappointment. I'm taking my CPU's offline until 36120 gets sanctioned. This seems like much ado about zilch.
Drat.
Reminds me of the old guy in church that argued against a new chandelier on the grounds "we don't need one and besides I don't know anybody that can play it".
I will be folding away like I have for the last couple of years, it's just sad that we can't do good in the name of this site. It's just about doing good works.
I am willing to contribute to team 36120 regardless of official sanction. The Freeper SETI team has been going on for a long time without it, afaik. If the team cannot be renamed then keep it and continue our progress.
Interestingly enough, server tasks run just fine. (It's an old laptop being used as a print server with some file storage)
The interface is slow when I RDP into the box.
No worries though. I'm hoping to get a dualcore 64bit machine this quarter!
Hmmm, well, I see this thread has taken an interesting turn overnight.
Personal observation:
When a fire broke out in town, most everyone pitched in to prevent a conflagration. They didn't ask whether the family was worthy to have their dwelling saved -- it was to save them all.
FR has never sanctioned anything it has not either started, or has gained critical mass on its own. Also, rightly so this activity is not "News", so complaining that the Mods moved it into General Chat shows that those complaining don't understand what this site and Jim Robinson's focus is about.
I'll leave my solo PC crunching away -- whether for FR/36120 or Stanford/0 -- for the greater good of mankind.
"It is easier to ask for forgiveness, than ask for permission." -- Adm. Grace Hooper, USN.
Thanks for the interesting link.
This is the way I see it.
1) Free Republic is the private property of Jim Robinson. As he does not endorse or wish to be associated with the Folding@Home Project, we must respect his wishes. Our current team name (FreeRepublic.Com Folders) and logo (captioned FREE REPUBLIC - freerepublic.com - Est. 1996) imply that this is official work of FR. Therefore, we must at least change our team name and logo to designate that is an UNOFFICIAL team, or to eliminate these references entirely.
2) These threads belong on Bloggers/Personal. From the posting guidelines, "For all of you who have blogs or personal web sites or personal news or opinion or forum sites that you would like to discuss or promote on Free Republic, here's the place to do it."
3) If you disagree with the motive, nature, or principles of Folding@Home, you are not required to VOLUNTEER to accomplish its ends.
I am not a mod or an admin; I just hope that those of us on Free Republic who wish to contribute to Folding@Home can do so in peace.
You're putting politics over science?
I'm here because I see it as a worthy effort. I don't give a Democrat dump whether it's officially sancitoned by FR, JimRob, or Mickey Mouse. I don't care whether it's in Chat, news, or activism. None of that matters.
I see it as a cause worthy of putting all my available CPUs on. All we do with our CPUs is read text anyway, here.
While I respect JimRob's decision as far as the FreeRepublic site goes, I see no reason for this project to not continue as an "unofficial" Freeper contribution.
I wish you would change your mind, Glenn. This is about stuff bigger than just us.
No. I just enjoyed these threads and celebrating the progress we made as a team. I'm a little taken-aback that the project is so misunderstood by the few who crashed this thread. Without being able to talk about the project in the open, it seems not worth the effort.
And I do think friendly competition with the dark side is entertaining.
"RC5-64"
Ha! That was a fun one - remember the T-shirt competition when we finally cracked it?
Not sure what to say here. I hope many of us who have joined, did so because we thought the project was worthwhile.
It's a good idea to take the website name off the team, but most of us are still freepers. So how about Freepin' Folders?
Or "Eagles Up"? "Eagles Up" came from Trixie (Lucianne Goldberg) who hasn't been here in years, so it's not an exclusive FR thing.
Anyway, we're sticking with Team 36120 too. Let's not take all this personally. There are so many differing opinions on every single issue, this is just one more. Water off a duck's back :-)
Klutz, this is rather disappointing. I joined the team because I thought it was worthwhile, fun, and got Free Republic attention in a forum it normally never would.
The fact that Kos and DU were fielding teams and we were smoking them was just gravy.
Jim, it is certainly your perogative to take the position you have. I wish you would reconsider. This is no more intrusive on your membership than the SETI program I have run for over five years, and has tangible benefit.
I love the fact that we freepers have made such a difference in such a short time. However, I "assumed" you were using the freerepublic.com name and logo with permission from Jim Robinson. Big NO-NO that you weren't...Jim IS FreeRepublic.
That said, I'm happy to continue with this project whatever it's named. Just let us know what it will be called, and don't get all bent out of shape because it's not exactly FreeRepublic.com.
