Pei told Xinhua in an exclusive interview recently when attending a national conference on archaeology here that the ostrich eggshell pieces, found in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region innorthwest China, were the most exquisite adornments of the paleolithic age in China and showed that the ancient Chinese had appreciation of beauty as early as 20,000 years ago... The ostrich eggshells have been spotted at the Shuidonggou relics site about 20 km east of Yinchuan, capital of Ningxia. And most of them were excavated in the same stratum. Archaeologists said the site might be a necklace processing place... The climate in northern China 20,000 to 30,000 years ago was warm and fit for ostriches. But the birds disappeared in the region about 10,000 years ago when the climate became cold, said experts... Early societies in Africa used shells to make necklaces as early as 100,000 years ago, according to Pei. In addition to the pieces of ostrich eggshells, a large number of stone implements and bone objects have also been excavated at Shuidonggou, said Pei. Of particular interest to archaeologists, the processing technique of the stone implements at the site shows the characteristics of the technique in ancient Europe. "It indicates that the exchange between east and west can be traced back to 20,000 to 30,000 years ago," Pei said.

An 18,000 year old (well-worn) shell necklace was found buried with the Hobbits on Flores Island. The Hobbits are believed to be Homo-Erectus.

I for one find it hard to believe that people had the brains to put something around their neck to look nice.
