The updated desktop boosts its already impressive credentials with some nifty tricks, user-friendly features, and the odd gimmick
Improving an excellent machine was the happy challenge facing Apple Computer (AAPL) designers as they worked up new versions of the iMac G5 desktop. Against the odds, they have succeeded. Though the changes in the new 17-inch ($1,299) and 20-inch ($1,699) iMacs are relatively small, they help keep it atop the heap as the best consumer desktop around.

PING!
|
I bought an iMac G5 iSight myself two weeks ago. It made a huge improvement over my six-year old G3, even with the G4 800Mhz upgrade card and a new, higher end video card (which I think damaged the mother board somehow).
I use it mostly for surfing and financial tasks, and it is great!! I thought that some web sites were terribly slow downloading graphics, but it turned out the my machine was just terribly slow processing the grapics. It was the motherboard, not the CPU or the video card.
I put tape over the iSight camera, because I don't trust the Apple factory representatives assurances that the camera cannot be accessed from outside.
The LCD monitor and DVD video applications are good enough that I'm thinking of getting a MyTV television tuner & PVR, or something similar, and not buying a new television set at all.

Are you sure "tape" is secure enough?
Wouldn't you feel safer using .... ;^>
Any news on that front?

Thank you, Boris, for that obligatory and typically ill informed Mac bashing opinion.
Rumor mill has it we should pay attention to the next Macworld Expo and Conference in January...
Sounds like a winner. I think i'll ask for one for Christmas.
Mac's are designed to impress interior decorators be used; PCs are designed to impress users accountants.
With what?
Innovation and dependability?
Who is Christopher Lowell and how do you know him?

Boris, A word of advice, if you please.
Don't try posting that opinion to RightWingProfessor unless you want to break the land speed record for being tflamed into charcoal. :-)
RWP, I'm giving you a courtesy ping (I believe you said you liked MACs ...) Thanks for the lesson in manners.
Shameless brag: a 1.2 Ghz Sonnet G4 2MB L3 upgrade that I installed on my 400mhz 'Sawtooth' G4 this weekend is ridiulously fast. I love my 1999 built Mac! I dare anyone to find a 1999 upgraded PC with this kind of performance, lol-
For the record I own a PC laptop.
Writing an NMR spectrometer operating system, complete with pulse-program compilers, a user interface, graphics rendering, printer drivers, etc., was a pain, but it means I get to laugh off sneers like this; they generally come from people who just successfully downloaded and installed a driver and think they're hot $h17.
I hope the flame didn't disappoint? :-)
Cheers!
