Hello all :) Starting earlier (8 PM eastern) to give those on Eastern time a bit longer to post here.
OK how about this? I was in the audience at a radio televised debate between a female conservative talk show host and three liberal tree huggers as they discussed the merits of their respective opinions.
The show was hosted at a restaurant/bar type place.
Conversation was getting pretty hot through the crowd, tossing verbal jabs back and forth.
One liberal started in on me with a tirade about peace in Iraq and the evils of western civilization and so forth. I asked him what the US and Europe ever did that could be compared to Iraq, and Communist China, and the Soviet Union and the kinds of killings that went on in those places?
So anyway, the liberal comes up with the British occupation of India and how evil that was and I granted him it was wrong to occupy the country, and then he goes on about how the people of India freed themselves through peaceful demonstrations....
Whoa, hey, am I missing out here?
And that was really too much to be taken by someone like me.
So I said to him that it was wrong to occupy the country and enjoy its wealth, however that is a long sight from murdering wholesale thousands of people, didn't he think so? He seemed not to be able to notice the difference. He went on about powerful leaders such as Gandhi and how peaceful resistance brought an evil western power to its knees....blhah blah blah
Oh, man, please tell me you really beat him good on that one.
That's not what happened at all. Britain could have wiped Gandhi and all his followers out without breaking a sweat. It was through their own kindness that they didn't.
The trap you fell in was acknowledging that America was "invading and occupying Iraq." You should be uncompromising in saying that we are there to liberate them, and also throw in there is Al-Zarqawi as good a resistance leader as Gandhi? Let him think about that one.
LOL :) Welcome nd good evening :)
So I looked him in the eye and told him that that exactly is the difference between Western civilization and despots such as Saddam. In the west, civilized governments can be banished from a country because they are civilized.
In Iraq Gandhi would have been nothing. He would have been fertilizer. No revolution, no sit ins, just fertilizer. That IS the difference between the USA and Britain and despots such as Hussein and Stalin.
The liberal was so shocked hearing the idea of Gandhi as fertilizer that his mouth just openend and shut like a fish.
Another listener standing by jsut said, "Too bad for you fella."
I grinned.
Ha! Showed him.
Oh yes you are correct,
I did say exactly that; there were several side trips that the conversation took. You know how it is.
thank yew.
Do I ever.
It took me a long time in my teenager years to admit it, but I'm no good at debating, at least not face-to-face. I get flustered, forget what I'm saying, start mumbling, etc.
I'm a lot better at it on-line though. After the fall of Saddam I got on an on-line debate with some liberals in other parts of the world, and smoked them like it was nothing.
Good evening Paul.
Practice makes perfect. I highly encourage you to try thein person thingoften.
Good practice for running for political office and squishing the liberal cockroaches. We need more good conservative apologists.
(BTW apologists don't apologize. They argue strongly for their positions.
After a lot of humiliation, I'm hesitant to try it again.
Still, I love talking issues with people I agree with. That's why I come to FR so often.
You win some you lose some, as time goes on you lose less and less.
OK now I am much too old for either of you two, but what are you looking for in a woman?
Try Toastmasters, they will help you work on your public speaking.AWB
How exactly do you define when you've "won?" It's not really a game.
Bottom line, maybe I'm a big softie. I'm not a real argumentative person. I like getting along with people, no hostilities...
