Woman Drives Station Wagon Into Bookstore

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - A woman drove a station wagon through a wall of the Barnes & Noble bookstore, sending glass, wood and books flying. Three people suffered leg injuries. Two were taken to a hospital.

The store was filled with shoppers at about 2 p.m. Sunday when the Subaru station wagon plowed backward through picture windows in a reading area in the store's northwest corner. The car took out the travel section and barreled about 40 feet through the bookstore before coming to rest in nonfiction.

"I thought it was an earthquake," said shopper Chris Badgett, 27. "There was screaming, people were running. I was running too."

The driver, Linda A. Duck, 58, has not been charged. She was not injured.

Just before the Subaru hit, Geoff Brosamer was sitting in the reading area, a space with armchairs, reading tables, framed portraits of famous authors and a fireplace.

Brosamer walked to the checkout counter and asked staff members to announce that his creative writing group would be meeting in the lounge. He walked back to the lounge, looked out the window, and saw the Subaru approaching.

"I saw this car turning, like it was going to go into the parking space," Brosamer said. "And then she just kept going and going."

The sound of shattering glass was deafening, witnesses said. People screamed and shrieked and dodged the car as it headed toward the fireplace, jerked right, and smashed into shelves of travel and history books.

A retired police officer helped get the driver out of the car. Two dogs in the back of the Subaru were taken to an animal clinic for safekeeping.

Duck told witnesses she'd just taken her dogs for a run and decided to stop by Barnes & Noble on her way home. She seemed to be in shock, bystanders said.

The store never closed.

Anchorage police spokesman Paul Honeman said Monday investigators will try to determine whether there was a mechanical failure or driver error that led to the incident.

Hungarian? It's a lovely name and the spelling seems right.

;-)

I dropped 7 letters off my last name about 20 years ago. My whole family discussed it since the day I was born - and when it came to finally do it - I was the only one who went for it.

So, my last name is different then the rest of my family.

Weird, huh!?

Nothing would make winter more fun (and exciting) than a bunch of senior citizens on roller blades!

So, was the driver booked?

Never mind. Says here she was booked, printed and bound over for trial. Since the the jail is overcrowed, they picked up her temporary accommodations at a table of con-tents.

DUCK, DUCK, you GOOSE! Book 'er, Danno.

The woman must have hit a Bar before she hit the Barnes and Noble.

(EVERYBODY SING ALONG NOW): Put in a parking lot.

The bad news is that the car came to rest on top of an author who was signing copies of his number one bestseller, "How I Beat Murphy's Law."

Did that woman have a Title to her car? If she had rammed into the poetry section of the bookstore we could have said this was "poetic justice", but I heard she came dang close to slamming into the "Food" section which would have been a recipe for disaster.

I have it on author-ity that this woman was working under hardcover. This incident may not have happened if she wasn't on her cell phone returning a page.

Hey, not bad! :-)

Asked what finally stopped the car's forward momentum, the head detective said, "It's a mystery."

We all know what would've happened if this had been an SUV. But now we have runaway station wagons.

Where can you go to get away from the world where you'll be safe? You can't even go to a bookstore cafe to relax in safety.

Just stay away from the "nonfiction" section lest you get tired. ;)

The suspense is killing me and dinner is waiting. This will be my last word on this subject.

Apparently her bumper got hooked on phonics. I heard there was total science in the store and readers described her as an Amazon of a woman. Will this woman be sentenced, or will she just wordlessly walk away?

The police said the driver was not injured in the accident but one of her dogs is in a comma. The driver was heard to say that she hopes to write this wrong and she will pay her dues.
