Its easy for the GOP to oppose gay marrriage because the Dems are saying they're against it and unwilling to push an amendment to the Constitution. The Reps can endorse one knowing it won't pass Congress without the Dems. The Reps get credit for opposing gay marriage and can tell their gay friends the plan won't pass anyway. The Dems can say they are against gay marriage without doing anything and let the courts do the dirty work of legalizing it. What new line will the politicians have when gay marriage gets legalized by the Supreme Court? Its the "law of the land" ala Roe vs. Wade? Also, there are some Reps around here who are in the closet gay and involved in the party and maybe a few hold elective office. The Dems trying to get people out of the closet to split the GOP? I smell a RAT? I smell a homosexual activist troll!
