Shaggy survivors hanging on after Katrina

More than two months after Hurricane Katrina blew in, animals are still being found alive in New Orleans, pulled out of attics and from beneath flooring or off of the streets, where theyve been surviving on sheer will and the kindness of strangers who leave food for them.
Some are little more than skin wrapped around bones. Starving, dehydrated and depressed, they still greet people trustingly, perhaps somehow recognizing that they represent salvation from their utterly bewildering circumstances.

Get an orange tabby. They are almost always male (which is what you want in an orange), they live forever, they have wonderful personalities, and he will catch your mice.

Just be careful with those kittens. Take a good look at their eyes when you get them. If they are runny, crusty, or seem to have any kind of discharge, DO NOT let them around your boy. Upper respiratory problems are very common in kitties who haven't been vetted, and it is contagious. If left untreated, it can be deadly. Of course you have the other problems with leuk and FIV, which can be passed from the momma in utero. They can take up to six weeks to show up in blood tests.
How old are the kittens, and have you been told anything about their current owners/home?

I used to always have cats adopt me too but since I have gotten my german shepherd and yellow lab, the stray cats go elsewhere. I had a black tom that would lay on his back to catch birds. That was my best cat as a kid. He let me dress him up in doll clothes and all kinds of silly things yet was one of the best hunters too.
I also know that there are more than normal in the shelters right now because of the storms. I have just started to look for another one. It's been nice not having to deal with the litter box for a while. lol

Thanks! I had one before and he was a good lap cat in between hunting. I really wanted to get me a fru fru kitty this time but need one that will give the dogs hell.

I know to look for good clear eyes.
I know remarkably little about them.... friend of a friend kind of deal... don't know age, sex, color, anything!

Anyone who evacuated without their pets should be charged with abandonment and animal cruelty.

Oh it was interesting especially with the alpha queen german shepherd. *visualizes*
*falls over laughing*

You want a fru fru that will take care of your dogs, get a Maine Coon. I have one, and he takes care of my 100 lb. lab. Totally rules the roost, and they have wonderfully laid back personalities. I have a photo of mine on my page. The first one, he's mostly black, is a MC. They get huge, too.

There is no reason pets should be left behind. A hurricane is not a surprise.

Our kittens are here! They're very small, and very overwhelmed by being here. They look reasonably healthy, but I'm glad we have a checkup scheduled for them in the morning!
The white one doesn't really have pink eyes, it's the flash ;~D

Oooooooh kitties! They are so adorable, and I am so jealous!
Our city (reasonable in most other areas) has a limit on 3 cats per household. Since we already have Tubby, Huey, and Charlotte, I'm at my limit.
Best wishes on their visit to the vet tomorrow.

Yes. You're right. I got my kitten on 10-9 from the Milwaukee Humane Society. Two days after I brought her home she had an URI. I took her to my vet and she was on anti's twice a day for two weeks.
She's all better now and happy.
Kittens, if not treated are little germ carriers!

Here's one more of them... chillin' out in their crate. They're very quiet. Not sure why the light one's eyes always show up red in the flash... in person they look the same as the other kitten.

Granny brought over some new toys for Lainy. One of those was an over sized jack. Ya know like a ball and jack we played as kids.
Well in the middle of the night last night I stepped on the damn thing in the hall, and it hurt sooo bad on my foot, bumped my head on the way to the bathroom with a few vulgar words. Needless to say that toy is in the trash!
What we put ourselves through for out pets! I tell ya :)
To: MotleyGirl70
Gidget has one of those round Kong things that's always in the middle of the floor. when you step on it, it rolls. I picture doing a big ole back flip like in a cartoon. That thing is gonna kill me one day!
