Need Cat Behavior Help

Posted on 11/02/2005 3:44:17 PM PST by meeps

I have a beautiful 2 year old orange tabby cat. Over the last 6 months he has developed a bad habit of peeing on our water bed. Last month, I took him to the vet and discovered he had a UTI. He was treated and seemed a bit better. However, he still will pee on our bed to wake me up in the morning. I now close him out of our bedroom in the morning. (I am an early riser, and get up at 6am). He has now found new spots to pee; the kids beds, a corner in the basement, etc. My husband is ready to make my orange tabby (Izzy) leave. We also have his sister, who is a beautiful calico. Any suggestions to help stop my cat from random peeing????

I have a young cat which though neutered, insisted on spraying on the corner of the bed. This went on for a while.

I got some Zero Odor -- the expensive stuff advertized on cable tv -- and went along behind him for a couple of weeks.

I have no idea if my activity had any real effect, but he stopped.

New York City did the same thing with subway graffiti artists.

Sometimes cats pee outside the box just for spite if you don't pay them enough attention.

Be sure the litter box is clean.

Yes, and preferably in an area with coyotes because you don't want to pass on those habits to other kittens.

Thankfully, not all of them. Mine has never gone outside of his litterbox.

Sabrina and her fat little sister Tabitha are both indoor only. Dennis, who likes to think he runs things, is indoor/outdoor. (He picks which when.)

Izzy is neutered. We have a very large house. We also have two dogs, Brittanys. The dogs don't much mind the cats. The cats are both indoor cats, because we live on a very busy street. We have multiple, large, hooded litter boxes for the cats. One on every level of the house. Izzy likes to be fed, first thing in the morning, although there is always food in his bowl. The litter boxes are all cleaned daily.

Heh. The words "CAT" and "BEHAVIOR" are oxymorons. In your cats eyes, if it wishes to pee-pee all over the house, it considers you all weird in that you do not pee-pee all over the house.

We have fixed our cat a "cathouse" on the back porch, built out of wood with a little door where four light bulbs are inserted in the "basement", with little holes drilled in the first floor so the bulbs can heat the house from the basement. Then it has a flat roof where its food and water are kept, with another hole in that roof so the cat can climb out from the first floor and eat and drink. Also, there's a sort of second roof where she can climb up and lie up there for fun, but it really wouldn't be necessary. This way she can go out the bottom room door and use the bathroom or go on nocturnal hunting trips. We let her in the house about an hour most nights, but then out she goes to her little warm house. I stuck her little bed inside on the first floor. In warmer weather we unplug the bulbs, in hot weather she sleeps where she wants to.

Is your cat fixed? If not, neutering can reduce the problem.

Also, try putting some of his food (on paper plates) in spots where he pees. Cats don't tend to go where they eat.

Good luck for you and your kitty.

Zero Odor is not cheap. but it's a lot cheaper than a vet, and presents no danger at all to the cat. Plus it helps your house immediately.

Is your cat peeing, as in a puddle, or spraying, with his tail in the air?

I have a neutered male, 12 years old, who did that his entire life until I sprayed his favorite surfaces with a product called Feliway. It's available in most pet stores. It's a pheromone that supposedly "calms" cats so that they aren't so agitated to have to mark their territory.

If he's puddling, this might help with that as well.

Someone mentioned bladder crystals. Have your vet do a urine test and make sure he doesn't have crystals. They are common in older cats and dogs, and, if he has them, changing his food could have a dramatic effect.

Puddles not spraying. $149.00 - no crystals, just a standard UTI. Very loving cat. Needs lots of attention. My husband is ready to send him out the door.

I have two Dachshunds that'll keep ol' Simba from doing random anything around the house. You'll have to keep a litter box and food bowl under the bed for the next several years, though.
