Need Cat Behavior Help

Posted on 11/02/2005 3:44:17 PM PST by meeps

I have a beautiful 2 year old orange tabby cat. Over the last 6 months he has developed a bad habit of peeing on our water bed. Last month, I took him to the vet and discovered he had a UTI. He was treated and seemed a bit better. However, he still will pee on our bed to wake me up in the morning. I now close him out of our bedroom in the morning. (I am an early riser, and get up at 6am). He has now found new spots to pee; the kids beds, a corner in the basement, etc. My husband is ready to make my orange tabby (Izzy) leave. We also have his sister, who is a beautiful calico. Any suggestions to help stop my cat from random peeing????

Cats do that.

I like cats but hate the fact that many of them pee all over the house no matter what you do.

Sorry I can't offer help! I hope someone has successfully stopped it and can tell you how.

Kitty ping!

I wish I could figure out what the answer is - our old alpha cat Sabrina won't cut it out. Something about the living room carpet makes her want to pee on it.

She's been checked, and as mean 12-year-old cats go, is fine healthwise - the vet has finally just declared her contumacious.

I hate to say it, but I think your choices are to have a miserable 20 years or find Izzy a nice home in the country where he can live outside for the most part.

That is the unfortunate conclusion I am coming to. His sister, Meeps, is the most well behaved cat in the world. They snuggle together and play all the time. I really don't want to make Izzy go, my kids would be crushed - and me as well.

My cat started peeing everywhere and now she is an outdoor cat. The only reason I felt comfortable putting her outdoors is because she is too old and can't jump over the walls, so she stays in our back yard.

Other than that until the UTI heals up, I don't know how to stop the peeing. Maybe get a de-pee sanitizer?

Don't feel bad ... I discovered my wife's cat taking dumps in my new 40 foot cigarette ocean racing boat. My wife sure misses that cat .....

I was thinking about the outdoor thing; but we live on such a busy street that I think he would only live for 1 day. He is so sweet in every other way. I have gone as far as to carry him to his litter box every morning and during the day. This just isn't right.

You can stop a cat from engaging in this behavior by purchasing an Alaskan Malamute

Have your veterinarian refer your cat (and you) to a board certified behaviorologist. They will take the history, and after consultation, will design a program specifically designed for your cat, which will include behavior modifying strategy and may also include medications to enhance and help you in achieving your goals. Most can be helped dramatically, some cured. Very few are incorrigible.

Good luck.

As a life long cat lover, let me offer a different answer than the live with it or get rid of the cat approach. Most of the time, elimination outside of the box is a symptom of a physical problem. You should have you cat undergo a full physical. The UTI may be cured, but also check for FUS, urinary track crystals, other internal problems such as tumors, etc. Sometimes, the problem behavior is learned from an earlier problem and the very difficult to remove odor serves as a continued trigger for the behavior. Get a specialized enzymatic urine remover cleaner and a black lite to detect the urine residue. Hope this helps.

You could always post a sign on your Waterbed.

"We don't sleep in your litterbox, so please don't pee in our bed."

I run a home for felines who pee where they are not supposed to. Just send the lovely little darling and problem will be cured.

By the way... if you care for the succulent gator meat... we have available some quite tasty cuts at 10.68 U$D per lb.

oh8eleven isn't too far off there. Don't they have some type of diaper for cats/dogs? I remember my moms dog used to wear one a long time ago.

Check into that. The thought of putting your beautiful cat outside, where he/she could get hit by a car or taken by someone, that's tough.

Thank you - I will try this, however, the $149 for the UTI didn't go over well.

Sounds a little odd--but explain to me ( and feel free to PM me here anytime--) Do the cats have access to the OUTSIDE?? Are they / he INDOOR cat(s) ?? or both?

I have had cats, dogs, racoons, you name it--we've had it.

When they are under one year..they can be trained GREAT!--by placing a kitty box with the litter somewhere--they will almost always use it to cover their tracks--that's ancestory with all animals.

When older--it is a little harder--but if you have another cat in the house who uses a box--the one who didn't before WILL start using it just to cover the OTHER cats' smell!

Is IZZY "nuetered"?--that makes a big difference.

Remember too--Cats and Dogs are just small stupid children--that won't grow up to ask to borrow your car keys one day!

They WILL do things on spite sometimes--like peeing where they KNOW you or the owner sleeps or has a favorite place.

We had a 1 year old male--use to pee on the bed and in the corner--we got a cat box--he did use it-but not all the time--then we got another cat ( they're not M&M's--you can't stop when you get just one!)--THAT cat use to LOVE making a big deal out of going in the box--and we ( wife ) use to make all these stupid baby sounding voices like " GOOOD boy!! "--the other cat saw this and NOW uses the box so as to NOT be left out of all the attention!!

Now he does pee sometimes--but rare --in a corner--but only normally when we have to yell at him for doing something he shouldn't--like make long distance calls or tape "Animal Planet" over our un-watched Wedding video.."

But I say--after 40 years of having them--give a cat a BOX--and filled DEEP with litter--( Old Kerry speeches ripped up normally would make anyone want to piss on them!) and a BOX that is BIG ENOUGH for them to manuver in--and not feel "Trapped"--remember-cats will ONLY get into something SMALL or enclosed if THEY want to--not because YOU tell them to do something! ( sounds like my fourth wife..but that's another story about being pee-d on!! LOL)

If all this doesn't work: --the encouragement--a big cat box--giving special cat treats when he DOES go in the box--try the last stand by--go to the fridge--bring out a hot dog and show it to Tabby and say," THIS is what happened to the Dog that USE to live here who didn't listen Either!!"

If that doesn't work--I am afraid you are lost!

Chris

p.s. please don't mind my spelling here--I am retarded..at least that is what I have been told here by others...
