VirtuaWin - The Virtual Desktop Manager
Introduction

Using a virtual desktop manager is a way to organize applications over several "virtual" desktops. For example if you use two virtual desktops you can put a webbrowser on desk 1 and by using a desktop manager "switch away" the webbrowser and it will seem like you have a new empty workspace (desk 2) to put another application/applications on. Virtual desktops are very common in the Unix community and once getting used to this, it is very hard to manage without it.
One of my own little projects is a virtual window manager for Win9x/ME/NT/Win2K/XP. I got tired of all the "multifunctional" managers with different displays and toolbars, etc.
This program is developed after my own needs, I wanted a quick and easy to use manager with no fancy graphics, and I seldom use more than 4 workspaces (but now it has up to 9). The idea of VirtuaWin is that it should be as simple and effective as possible but still highly configurable.
VirtuaWin is copyright (C) 1999-2004 and 2005 by Johan Piculell and is from version 2.0 and up, licensed through the GNU General Public License. See www.gnu.org for the complete license.
I would like to give credits to the person that created Inno Setup.
Features
GPL licensed
Configurable key/mouse control
Small, fast and easy to use, "just the needed stuff(TM)" :)
Supports user defined icons
Can keep an active window on every desktop
Can set windows sticky to make them appear on all desktops
Configurable layout of virtual desktops, up to 9 desktops Supports modules for additional features
Can save applications desktop belongings and restore them upon restart
Plus much more...

Just thought I would start to give freepers a look at some of the sourceforge projects out there they might like. So weekly I am going to pick a small simple project that people might find useful.
This weeks winner is virtuwin a program that brings virtual screen functionality to windows desktops. I thought it was a good place to start for those who might be timid about trying out an OSS project on their desktop.

Just tried it out on my company laptop running XP. Pretty cool. I think the desktop switcher could use a little more work, but the functionality is all there.

Yea I put this up because I know some people are nuts about virtual desktops. Personally I don't get it, I even turn them off on my Linux boxes. I can see how you might really need them if you're using twm or wm but the taskbar has really eliminated the need for them..

Hmm..
I have been using Blackbox for Windows, with the most current version being Xoblite, for about 3 years. It gives virtual desktops and it has a powerful right-click on the desktop that lets you browse your computer, any networked computer, or network drive all through "fly-out" type menus. It also hides all of your desktop icons so the background is completely clear.
I recommend it highly.

Handy for some people with mixed environments. Shows any desktop on any platform with screen only fast protocol.
Used VNC (IIRC) years ago to work from home. I was using it on my windows box to see my X desktop at work.
If you don't mind the security hole, also useful as a console for headless boxes.

Phato, run vnc with the localhost option and pipe it over ssh.. I always block the port rand 5800-6100 on my servers... It can be done with windows but why bother when you can use netmeeting or terminal services..

To: Golden Eagle
I posted it as I said "because I know some people are nuts about virtual desktops" and its a concept not too many plain old windows users are familiar with.
I picked a simple, well tested, and neatly packaged piece of software that windows users might find useful. I hope that in some way my posting here also benefited you.
Have a nice night..

GE I would like to bring something up with you;
I recently was moved to stop being contentious over unimportant things. I think its something I was already thinking about but a sermon by Alistair Begg put me over the top. From that point on I have been kind, non confrontational, and polite to everyone on the board including you. I have even went so far as to ask forgiveness for the times I picked fights, and the times I allowed myself to be drawn into fights.
If you forgive me or not is between you and God and I leave that there but I have a concern about you:
"You obsession with open source software is maniacal." Would indicate I show obsessive behavior in regards to this OSS on this forum, look at my posting history and you will see a significant amount of my time goes to threads that have nothing to do with OSS or tech in general. You on the other hand carefully find any OSS related thread out there no matter how innocuous (like this one) and insult somebody, this does not speak well of your heart towards Christ. Before talking about my obsession please handle the plank in your own eye..

You definitely need to publicly repent for all your past lies before you start including Christ in the discussion. You can start with the one you repeated over and over that all Windows 2000 support was ending. Till then, you're simply no more believable than you've ever been.
To: Golden Eagle
GE, I'm not getting dragged into arguments about what you or I consider full support. You're attitude on 'my need to repent for God' should be less important than your attitude on 'How would God want me to treat other people' and 'is this something God would consider worthy of a flame war'..
I have no care if you consider me believable, the vast majority of people I speak with here do. Know that I forgive you for continuing to try and bait me into a flame war and I hope that before you go to God in prayer asking for forgiveness of your trespasses you consider how you have handled it when fellow men has asked the same of you..

When I start spreading falsehoods on thread after thread you can start worrying about me. Till then, you should be worrying about those that do.
To: Golden Eagle
When I start spreading falsehoods on thread after thread you can start worrying about me. I would be more concerned about your attitude in forgiving others than your spreading of falsehoods.. Read the parables and understand what they mean..

Sure, but you'd be better off praying for those like yourself who constantly lie and then try to claim righteousness. Or those that viciously attack me and call me ridiculous names. Your claimed concern over my sins, whatever you purport them to be, is apparently nothing more than blasphemous hypocrisy.
To: Golden Eagle
How am I a hypocrite when I myself have confessed I am a sinner no better than anyone else in here in need of salvation through the mercy of Christ? What blasphemy is in that?
constantly lie
Still trying to draw me into a flame war because we disagree over terms like full support.... its not going to work..
Or those that viciously attack me and call me ridiculous names.
Then you can complain about people calling you names while you have said:
You're still at home stuck using your dad's computer? That would explain a lot. : Insulting someone for living at home who had not even addressed you
Sure you are, MikieInOhio, ROFL. : Insulting a soldier who made it home from Iraq
I rarely commmented on these topics at all till those losers showed up : Insulting people (losers) for having ping list you find objectionable
Meanwhile, you bozos run around saying : More insulting language
LMAO, you idiots don't even know the difference between a workaround and a patch! : More insulting language
I could keep going but if you cant start to see you have a plank in your own eye that needs to be dealt with (I don't think you have ever asked forgiveness for insulting people), and you call me a hypocrite....
