FR Pool on Date and Time of Miers Withdrawal [vanity]
governsleastgovernsbest

Posted on 10/21/2005 8:16:43 AM PDT by governsleastgovernsbest

At the risk of alienating the roughly 1/3 of FReepers who, judging by the FR poll, support the Miers nomination, I believe its withdrawal has now become a question of when, not whether.

The final nail was probably the John Fund article in this morning's WSJ which strongly suggests that if hearings proceed, some very messy matters regarding the Texas Lottery and W's National Guard service will be dredged up. Here's a link to the Fund column:

http://www.opinionjournal.com/diary/?id=110007431

Note also that, after staying above the fray, the influential Wall Street Journal editorial today calls the Miers nomination a "mistake."

So with this as preface, and again, with apologies in advance to FReepers who might be outraged at the exercise, I am starting this pool to predict when the announcement will come - be it from the WH or from Ms. Miers herself - that the nomination is being withdrawn.

I'll start the ball rolling by putting in my pick at the early end of the spectrum:

Monday, October 24th, 5 PM.

Have at it!

No withdrawal, either on her part or the President's.

During the hearing, Miss Miers will shine and she will be reassuring to conservatives.

The Dems will make slavering braying asses of themselves for the world to see. She will be confirmed.

She will become an immediate member of the Scalia bloc. She will vote conservatively even though her written decisions will not be Shakespearian and she will, on occasion, plug in the office coffee pot.

"If" or "when" is too difficult for me to predict.
But IF it happens, it's a sure bet that the anouncement will come from Miers.
Dubya will NOT make it appear as if he's the one who backed out.

See? I said it was a "sure bet", didn't I?

I predict GOP sentors inform the White House that they can't support her before the hearings, thus killing the nomination.

As for "barring some huge disclosure" as a poster put it, that would be that she thinks John Grisham is a "legal writer". That alone should disqualify her.

LOL. Maybe I should offer over/unders on the Miers nomination and other "proposition" bets: where will the announcement take place: Rose Garden, WH Press Room, etc.?

I don't think she will withdraw. I think she'll be confirmed.

I'm neither a supporter nor critic of Meirs, but I just don't believe her nomination will be withdrawn............

Would you want to translate that to a specific date and time, so that you would become eligible for the Grand Prize and the admiration of your fellow FReepers for being the winner? ;-)

I suppose that's right, though I don't think anyone would believe if she withdraws that W in fact wanted her to hang in there.

That's my hope. She might even bring in a rhubarb and strawberry pie once in a while. I'll bet Souter and Kennedy never have. Forget Ginsberg. She's never seen the inside of her kitchen. :)

Hmm, the Official Rules don't permit 'round entries. Can I put you down for Oct. 28th, 11:59 PM?

Hey, I foresee a cottage industry -- set up your own gambling website devoted to betting on how/when/where major political fiascos (or perceived fiascos) will be resolved.

Wouldn't surprise me to learn Souter is a gourmet cook who shares his creations with fellow justices along with nifty holiday decorating tips.
