Good Sunday evening to you, fellow Freeper baseball fanatics. Great week just past, and an unreal last week to the season upon us..I wanted to get the thread up now, since I may not have a chance to do so tomorrow..The races are wilder, and tighter, than ever..
Sums you up nicely there. Next you're gonna be singing the praises of Ben Grieve -- you see his numbers from '97-'02?
Even if they lose the division, they clinch the wild card by winning 97 games (3 wins). Boston and New York can't both reach 97. It's kind of like their division elim # of 5, but with at least 2 opponent's losses guaranteed as NY and Boston play H2H.
I just compared their first 600 or so games. Give Gibbons a few more years and he will likely be even better. I never said that I didn't like Trot, all I said was that you get more from Gibbons dollar for dollar. I see Trot Nixon at the plate working the counts for walks instead of driving the ball. I see him taking too many check swing 3rd strikes. He has line drive power and should be using more of it.
That's the whole point of our offense. Work the count, be patient, get on base, wear down pitchers, look for pitches to hit AND AS A RESULT drive the ball and score lots of runs.
For the first time in his career Jay Gibbons is breaking .500 slugging (he's AT .500 now). Yet he's STILL only a better-than-average OFer because he doesn't get on base. A few more 0-for-4's and he's right back at mediocre.
No, because any starter can be a reliever. The reverse, however, is not necessarily true.
I saw Gibbons walk a few times this past weekend and I see him only getting better. Besides, he also plays out of position.
You want to tell me that Nixon is worth $5 million a year more than Gibbons due to his higher walk and strike out tally?
I think I have it figured out that:
6 wins takes the division or atleast ties it
5 wins takes the wild card
4 wins probably causes a tie in the wild card
Someone correct me if I am wrong.
I see him only getting better.
Very possibly. He might even manage to eclipe some of Trot's weaker years. Or this could be his "career year". But since he's been at roughly .310 OBP, .480 SLG ever since he made the bigs (down year in 2004), and he's already 28, there's a good chance we've seen all we're gonna see from him. Then there's the issue you mentioned: he's a 1st baseman playing RF.
You want to tell me that Nixon is worth $5 million a year more than Gibbons
I already said that wasn't even in question. Nixon is undoubtedly a better player but the reason he's paid so much more is he's been eligible for free agency. I assume Gibbons hasn't been eligible for free agency yet; perhaps this winter?
Wake has had a great September.
Shill tonight
See, I learn something new every day! /sarc
I live in MD a bit south of Baltimore, So Ive see the Sox / Os 5 times this year. This year more than any other, Camden Yards is Fenway South.
You cant blame the Os fans for not showing up, its not like Angelos gives them anything to root for. Even when there were hot, hardly anybody thought theyd be in the hunt come September. Not going after Bernette and the Palmerio situation sealed the deal.
3-way tie with the Yanks and Indians!
Wake has kept us in the playoff hunt. He's the only guy with a sub-4.00 ERA.
That Saturday game could be another 1-0 game, but we need to be the team with the "1."
Gotta love a good 3-way!
Errr... ummmm...
Hey, I wasn't the one who said that Smoltz, Gordon, Righetti, and Eck are the only ones that, using my opinion on the Cy Young Award, deserve to win it.
This Yankees/O's gam may set the ML record for longest regular 9 inning game..
Games like this expose the Yankees bullpen weakness, much like the Sox. Tonight Schilling was mediocre leaving 89-91 mph pitches up in the zone to be hit. Of course Bradford performed to expectations.
I see Pedro took the night off when you needed him. Tsk, tsk.
