Troll Burnt, Tortured, Fined and Zotted.

Posted on 09/23/2005 12:07:11 PM PDT by tjefferson101

Millions of innocent men, women and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined and imprisoned; yet we have not advanced one inch towards uniformity.

-Thomas Jefferson, Notes on Virginia, 1782

Millions of innocent men, women and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined and imprisoned; yet we have not advanced one inch towards uniformity.

-Thomas Jefferson, Notes on Virginia, 1782

History, I believe, furnishes no example of a priest-ridden people maintaining a free civil government. This marks the lowest grade of ignorance of which their civil as well as religious leaders will always avail themselves for their own purposes.

-Thomas Jefferson to Alexander von Humboldt, Dec. 6, 1813.

Christianity neither is, nor ever was a part of the common law.

-Thomas Jefferson, letter to Dr. Thomas Cooper, February 10, 1814

In every country and in every age, the priest has been hostile to liberty. He is always in alliance with the despot, abetting his abuses in return for protection to his own.

-Thomas Jefferson, letter to Horatio G. Spafford, March 17, 1814

"During almost fifteen centuries has the legal establishment of Christianity been on trial. What have been its fruits? More or less in all places, pride and indolence in the Clergy, ignorance and servility in the laity; in both, superstition, bigotry and persecution."

- James Madison

". . . Some books against Deism fell into my hands. . . It happened that they wrought an effect on my quite contrary to what was intended by them; for the arguments of the Deists, which were quoted to be refuted, appeared to me much stronger than the refutations; in short, I soon became a through Deist."

- Benjamin Franklin

"If we look back into history for the character of the present sects in Christianity, we shall find few that have not in their turns been persecutors, and complainers of persecution. The primitive Christians thought persecution extremely wrong in the Pagans, but practiced it on one another. The first Protestants of the Church of England blamed persecution in the Romish church, but practiced it upon the Puritans. These found it wrong in the Bishops, but fell into the same practice themselves both here [England] and in New England."

- Benjamin Franklin

"Of all the systems of religion that ever were invented, there is no more derogatory to the Almighty, more unedifiying to man, more repugnant to reason, and more contradictory to itself than this thing called Christianity

- Tom Paine

If Christ were here there is one thing he would not be -- a Christian. -- Mark Twain, Notebooks

Jefferson was a brilliant man. But sadly, he had a huge ego and was educated beyond his level of intelligence.

"Jefferson was a brilliant man" stands by itself.
You need to remember the context of the times
he was living in when me made those writings.
By law you had to be a member of the Anglican
Church with the King as the Protector of the Faith.

That might cause some to become missing at the
pew come Sunday morning.

Jefferson was proud that he authored "The Virginia
Statutes of Religious Freedom" so that his fellow
citizens could worship where they pleased.

We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge or gallantry would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution is designed only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate for any other.

John Adams

Your argument is fundamentally flawed as, I believe, is your brain.

It isn't Christianity responsible for most historical wars and massacres -- it is Religion.

More blood has been spilled in the name of religions than for any other reason or rationale.

But whereas Christianity has evolved, moved forward, repented and apologized for its past mistakes the Muslim Death Merchants YEARN for the dark ages.

They are moved by a lust for blood and their religion is a cult of death.

LOL! It has happened, though it's rare.

What can I say, I'm certainly not perfect.

(Just ask Mrs. CD if you believe otherwise)

There was a time in FreeRepublic's when certain Liberals lurked and posted here that put forth thoughtful dissertations. Even though I didn't always agree with the major portion of these diatribes they did actually make me think. If this is the best that the Dems can come up with now adays I admit I miss the days of quidam, eschoir and ASH.

Do you have any idea how many spittle-riddled papers I have to try to clean up because of your pic? If laughter is the best medicine, I'm pretty healthy today.

Wives are amazing in their ability to spot flaws in husbands, but inly after they get married. I know all to well of this remarkable ability.

Really too bad, because like a good leftist he uses founding father's quotes against Christianity to show how "bad" Christians are. I wish he had posted quotations by Franklin, Washington, and Jefferson on the Jews so we could ask whether he agrees with them. I've seen them and they're NOT pretty.
