Let's take back our party
9/21/2005 | John Rossomando

The track George W. Bush has taken the Republican Party down is the exact opposite of the one I embraced when I became a Republican 15 years ago in high school.

Just to say a bit about myself, I have worked for Republican legislators, worked on several Republican campaigns, attended the 1996 Republican National Convention in San Diego as part of the Young Voters Program. I have not voted for the president once, but twice.

First of all, I became a Republican because I thought the party stood for fiscal responsibility and it opposed the concept of nation building. Yet, I have watched the same party grow non-defense spending astronomically, creating prescription drug entitlements for seniors, expand the Education Department that Reagan wished to abolish, neglect illegal immigration to give his friends cheap labor, etc.

In the 1990s, Republicans such as myself condemned the Clinton administration for its nation-building activities in Bosnia and Kosovo. Yet, the president started an adventerous war in Iraq on the idealistic notion of recreating Iraq in our image: nation building, in other words. Sure Saddam was a butcher, a tyrant and all of the above, but in the war on terror he was a second-rate player. The war in Iraq is also unconstitutional as were the wars in Korea and Vietnam because Congress has the constitutional power to declare war.

We had far more cause to declare war on Iran, which has served as the terrorist kingdom since 1979: especially because Iran has given safe harbor to Al-Qaeda's top brass.

We little people need to force George W. Bush and the Republican congressional leadership to return to the principles of the 1994 Contract With America or face certain defeat in the mid-terms.

Let's start putting country ahead of party and get our party to stop acting like 1950s Democrats.

What ever good you want to do, get it done in Republican primaries, because after that we need to vote Republican or we'd be enabling left leaning Democrats into power.

Regarding Iraq, Saddam was financing terror in Israel and elsewhere, the bitch had to go.

Pardon my dog talk.

And how to do it? If we'd just sent a missile down his throat I wonder if we'd be better off? I don't think so.

We let a lot of missiles go and in the end we found him months later hiding in a pit.

Buffoon? This is not what was being said at the time, nor after Gingrich produced everything he said House Republicans would do. You may not like Newt, but please don't denegrate what he did for the Republican party. The Republican takeover of congress because of the 1994 election is too important.

Yes but even if we could have taken him out without ground forces..I think we would be in worse trouble if we had. I'm sure the option was considered.

Some of my best friends are buffoons. He can't help it. He just is. Most of us are I guess.

Hardly, you don't understand Arab culture. I do, having lived among them. They don't take kindly to foreigners imposing governments upon them, whether they be Ottoman, British or American. Also, Iraq is an artificial country that only held together because of Saddam's tyranny.

The Brits couldn't control it in the 1920s.

Besides what strategic blow did the invasion of Iraq give to global terror. Having siezed Tehran with help from Iranian students who hate the mullahs would have done a far better job at that.

I think the war in Iraq has been nothing but naive stupidity.

Ad hominem arguments are for individuals without any good arguments.

The primary process where there is another race after is the only time you can make a point and not do damage that benfists Democrats IMO.

The way I recall it Saddam was neither Ottoman, American nor British and they didn't take kindly to foreigners then either.

Yep, instead of ine dictator, you would have had Al Quieda taking over the whole country instead of just having Saddam being helpful and protecting them.

When Republicans act like Democrats-lite, the real Democrats win. The Republican Party used to be one where debate was encouraged as was free-thinking, not the worship of the almighty leader.

Groupthink only leads to defeat.

GW Bush is nothing but a Rockefeller Republican. Frankly, he reminds me of LBJ.
