(Vanity)Yucky Foods from Childhood
Millee

Posted on 09/20/2005 9:43:01 AM PDT by Millee

Eddie Murphy once did a hilarous skit about how instead of getting a McDonalds hamburger, his mom would make him a soggy ol' burger using wonder bread. So todays' question is: what gross food were you forced to eat as a kid (or how did you sneak it to the dog?) For example:

1. Chipped Beef on toast - Gross, gross, gross! My dinner on those nights usually consisted of dry toast. I'd practially use an eyedropper when applying that white, pasty goop.

2. Canned spinach - like algae from a fish tank.

3. Raisins - My brother liked them so Mom would get them as a snack for both of us! Raisins ONLY belong in oatmeal cookies. Period.

Please use this space to vent regarding any gastronomical childhood traumas you may have experienced. :-p

I love fried zucchini, too! I haven't tried serving this to my kids yet. Flash forward 15 years and my kids will be on a thread like this saying I made them eat it! LOL!

When she was about 8 years old, one of my daughters used to slip meat out of her mouth at the dinner table and hide it in way in the back of her sock drawer. I found it because of the smell.

She is now married to a serious carnivore and seems to be just fine grilling up steaks all around!

Zucchini corn bread is great, too. Moist and yummy!

I had a great zucchini ice cream at our local zucchini festival - it was sort of like pistachio. That's because zucchini really has no flavor of its own. Or not much, at least.

I was part of a band of young mothers saving money in the 70s and one of them took up cooking tripe. Her specialty was a tripe stew that smelled so bad you didn't even want to enter her house. She used to invite us all for dinner...I think each family did one dinner with her, and then we started inviting her and her family to our houses. But maybe that was her plan all along.

Lima beans was the first thing that popped into my mind too. Ugh! My parents tried to make me sit there until I ate at least one, but I ususally outlasted them. Hey, I had nothing but time on my hands!

I can't say I remember yucky foods from childhood, but one thing I remember ALL my family liked which makes people I tell about it go YUCK! is:

1. Toasted Bread, break in pieces and put in a bowl.
2. Chopped green onions on top.
3. A dab of butter
4. Warm milk
5. Salt & Pepper

Yummy! Yummy!

Sawdust in plastic wrap. Who ever though these were edible?

So todays' question is: what gross food were you forced to eat as a kid (or how did you sneak it to the dog?)

LOL! When my younger sister would leave the table after 'cleaning' her plate, there would be vegetables hidden in all sorts of places. A pile under her chair, under her plate, in towels, squished under the serving bowl, or just plain onto our younger sibling's plate! Except for peas, she loved peas, still does.

Then she would race to sneak 'desert' - sugar cubes right out of the box, as many as she could stuff into her mouth and pockets until she was caught!

YUCK! No! I'm just kidding. Bread and milk. That is yummy. We don't eat it enough. It's funny that it's thought of as outdated, since we just started eating it five or so years ago. LOL!
Here is more to add to the list: limburger and herring (my dad's New Year's Eve favorite. good, but stinky)
anyone into tomatoes and sugar (another of my daddy's favorites)
Pretty much if it was unusual, my dad would try it. He told me about a time he was at a dinner where possum was served. He knew ahead of time and it did not bother him. The other guests raved about the meal until they found out what it really was.

My husband recently introduced me to something his mom made called 'meat filling'. I think it is bologna, mayo and pickles ground up in a meat grinder and put on bread. It looks and smells like dog vomit. She occasionally makes him a batch to bring home if he is over at her house. He is the only one that will touch it. When it was time to throw it away, I wouldn't even open the container- I just threw it out too (it was was of those Ziploc disposable things, thank goodness)!

My mom would make baked eggs every other Sunday. She would bake them in muffin pans. They had the texture of an old abused Super Ball. I would usually spend that Saturday night at a friends house so I wouldn't have to eat that stuff. I am gagging now just thinking about it!!!!

"Rhubarb pie. What the hell is rhubarb and who would want to put it in a pie?

Mincemeat pie also sounded gross. Just what kind of meat were they putting in it, anyway?"

Dude, I forgot about Rhubarb pie, that was some nasty stuff. Mincemeat pie was a close second. To this day I wonder who the hell eats, and enjoys this stuff?

I guess my family defies the "norms"

Me, my wife and 3 adult children scattered across the US. We ALL like lima beans. We ALL like brussels sprouts We grow our own rhubarb and love the pies I enjoy an occasional liverwurst & peanut butter sandwich When our kids were young they would try anything once and usually found they LIKED oddball foods
