Sofia Perched on Huge Ancient Amphitheatre

The ruins of the largest on the Balkans area amphitheatre emerged from beneath the ground in Sofia making Bulgaria's capital the third in Europe perched on such ancient building. So far, only Madrid and Paris have had large amphitheatres within the city's boundaries... Archaeologists have unearthed thousands of bronze and one gold coin with the image of Emperor Constantinos the Great.

In looking a little further into this, I found out that it should have been "Huge Ancient Amphitheatre Perched on Giant Sofa". Okay, yeah, that stunk. It's early, and I only slept four hours. ;')

Not surprising. Sofia is on the site of Sardica which was a major late-Roman city. It was the capital of the province of Dacia Mediterranea and apparently Constantine the Great even contemplated moving the capital of the Empire to the city before deciding upon Byzantium.

Sardica was over-run several times in the 5th and 6th centuries by Huns, Bulgars, and others and was apparently destroyed and rebuilt several times.
