The idea came up this a.m. that maybe since there is going to be a huge problem involving rescue and temporary housing of the homeless from the Katrina hurricane in the Gulf that maybe cruise ships could be used. And the S.S. Hope might be used for those who undoubtedly will need medical care.

Just a thought. I don't know how feasible this might be but it sure would be a temporary solution for the thousands of homeless in the Gulf.

I think this was mentioned on Fox news this morning. Maybe it will happen...

Checked out Gov. Blanco was asked this yesterday and her answer was that FEMA would have to buy the ships time. What a dolt!

Imagine putting 1000's of folks who've been wading in a toxic soup for 5 days on cruise ships...

The cruise lines would have to do this voluntarily, I doubt the US has the power to commandeer them. I don't think it's a particularly good idea given the character of many of the people who would be living on them. They'd be stripped to the bulkheads.

Wouldn't you just love to be the captain -- or crew -- of that ship? I mean, considering the sort of people that would storm, push-and-shove, their way on board?

Hey, lets not use a wide brush here just because a handful of people looted. There are criminals everywhere, even in PA. LOL But there are tens of thousands of people stranded and homeless needing a temporary place to stay. And the cruise ships could be docked in the Gulf and those people stranded could be transported to those ships.

I have wondered and maybe someone can answer this question. Why couldn't trains have been used, prior to the hurricane, to evacuate people from the cities into safer regions?

Last night on the radio I heard someone mention the idea of bringing cruise ships in to help house the refugees. Good idea or not we do need to think creativily to get through this. I suggest bringing in some of the home ported Aircraft Carriers.

"Hey, lets not use a wide brush here just because a handful of people looted."You just got paint from that brush all over you. HANDFULL! Sounds like a DU lie to me. How big are your hands. Unless my TV has 100 ghost images, I see hordes of trash taking items other than those needed for survival.
In today's PC world we cannot repeat what our own eyes show us.

99.9% of cruise ships that dock in the US are registered in Liberia. The US safety laws to protect the passengers are too strict and too expensive for the operators. It probably won't happen.

What I'm wondering is,why aren't they using hovercraft to move around and perform search and rescue. It's the perfect vehicle for this.

Couldn't FEMA commandeer the ships? Not that I like that idea, but they have the power, don't they?
